Chapter 6 - Justice in the Shadows

One week later, the underground world of Chicago had completely transformed.

The Marcus Vance regime was wiped out down to the last sympathizer. Every asset Marcus had stolen, every shell corporation he had set up, was dismantled and seized by Luca’s loyal captains. The police department, heavily paid off by Marcus for years, suddenly found themselves flooded with anonymous, airtight federal evidence detailing every single crime Marcus had committed. By the end of the week, Marcus was sitting in a maximum-security federal holding cell, awaiting a trial that would guarantee he never saw the sun again.

Inside the sprawling Moretti estate, the heavy, oppressive gloom that had haunted the halls for three years was entirely gone.

The massive living room was filled with sunlight pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows. Sophia was no longer trapped in a pink wheelchair. Her little pink shoes clicked against the hardwood floor as she chased Luca’s massive Cane Corso across the Persian rug, squealing with absolute, unadulterated joy.

Luca stood on the private rear veranda, leaning against the stone railing with a cup of black coffee in his hand. He watched his daughter run, a genuine, radiant smile—one the city of Chicago had not seen in a decade—gracing his rugged face.

Behind him, sliding glass doors opened softly.

Hannah stepped out onto the veranda. She no longer wore the mint-green waitress service dress. She wore a simple, elegant blue silk blouse and trousers, looking completely at peace.

“She hasn't stopped running since breakfast,” Hannah smiled warmly, leaning against the railing beside Luca. “I think she has enough energy to power the entire city.”

Luca turned his head, looking at the woman who had sacrificed everything to keep his daughter safe.

“She’s making up for three lost years,” Luca said softly. He reached out, gently placing his large, tattooed hand over hers. “And so are you, Hannah. You don't have to work another day in your life. This estate, everything I own, it belongs to you and Sophia. You are family now. My family.”

Hannah’s cheeks flushed a soft, rosy pink. She looked down at his hand over hers, a deep sense of relief washing away the last remnants of fear from her soul. “I don't need your empire, Luca. I just wanted her to be safe with her real father.”

“You are her second mother, Hannah,” Luca insisted firmly, his piercing eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. “And nobody leaves this family.”

👉 The traitors have fallen and the family is reunited, but what does life look like for the Moretti empire now that the king has found his true heart?
