Chapter 48 - Blood and Iron

Luca planted a localized breaching charge against the electronic lock of the heavy steel doors. He stepped back, shielding his face as the explosion blew the doors violently inward, ripping them off their reinforced hinges.

The executive bunker was a massive, windowless room filled with server racks and a polished mahogany desk.

Sterling Blackwood stood behind the desk, clutching a heavy magnum revolver. His impeccably groomed appearance was completely ruined. He was sweating profusely, his tie undone, his eyes wide with the sheer, unadulterated terror of a man who had finally realized he was not the apex predator.

On the monitors behind him, the news was broadcasting the federal indictments against Aegis. He had lost his company, his money, and his freedom in the span of three hours. And now, the devil himself had broken down his door.

"Stay back, Moretti!" Blackwood screamed, his hands shaking violently as he aimed the heavy revolver at Luca’s chest. "My men are calling the police! The feds will be here any minute!"

"The feds are coming to arrest you, Blackwood," Luca stated, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that seemed to vibrate the concrete walls. He stepped into the room, entirely ignoring the gun pointed at him. "My wife made sure of that. You are a global pariah. You have absolutely nothing left."

"I have this!" Blackwood shrieked, cocking the hammer of the revolver. "I'll kill you, you arrogant mobster!"

Blackwood pulled the trigger.

The heavy caliber round slammed into the ceramic ballistic plate on Luca’s chest. The sheer kinetic force staggered Luca backward a half-step, knocking the wind from his lungs, but the armor held.

Before Blackwood could fire a second shot, Luca closed the distance with terrifying, explosive speed.

He didn't use his rifle. He slapped the heavy revolver out of Blackwood’s trembling hands with a brutal, bone-shattering strike. The gun clattered uselessly into the corner of the room. Luca grabbed Blackwood by the throat, his massive, tattooed hand lifting the CEO entirely off his feet, slamming him violently against the concrete wall.

Blackwood gasped for air, his face turning a dark shade of purple as his legs kicked uselessly above the floor. He stared down into Luca’s gray eyes, expecting to see the blinding, manic rage of a killer.

Instead, he saw a cold, absolute, and terrifying calm.

"You thought you could use my daughter to break me," Luca whispered, his grip tightening just enough to let Blackwood feel the absolute edge of death. "You thought my love for my family made me weak. You forgot that I spent twenty years drowning this city in blood to build my empire. I am a man of peace, Blackwood. But never, ever mistake my peace for weakness."

Blackwood wheezed, a pathetic, strangled sound of absolute defeat.

Luca released his grip, letting the ruined CEO collapse onto the floor in a gasping, pathetic heap. Luca looked down at him, his face carved from unyielding granite.

"If I kill you, I give you peace," Luca said coldly. "Instead, I am going to let the federal authorities drag you out of here in chains. You will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security black site, knowing that a waitress and a reformed mobster destroyed everything you ever built."

May you like

Luca turned his back on the weeping, ruined man, stepping out of the bunker and leaving the ashes of the Aegis Group behind him forever.
