Chapter 1 - The Miracle on the Marble

The magnificent Chicago charity gala ballroom shimmered under a sea of glittering chandeliers, cascading floral arrangements, and wealthy guests dressed in formal eveningwear. Amidst the wealth and power, Luca Moretti—Chicago’s most feared mafia boss—stood like a monolith. Tall, muscular, and exceptionally handsome, he wore an expensive tailored black suit, his dark brown hair swept back and light stubble shadowing his sharp jawline. Tattoos covered his muscular forearms, but his intense eyes were entirely locked on the person sitting beside him.
His three-year-old daughter, Sophia.
Adorable, fragile, and bright-eyed with long curly golden-brown hair, Sophia sat in a pink wheelchair. For three agonizing years, she had been unable to use her legs. Every top specialist in the country had declared her permanently paralyzed following a tragic, violent home invasion that had stolen her ability to walk. Luca had burned cities to find the culprits, but nothing could fix his little girl.
Hannah Carter, a 32-year-old plus-sized waitress wearing a mint-green service dress with white lace trim, approached them, carrying a silver tray with apple juice. She crouched beside Sophia with a warm, nurturing smile.
“Apple juice again, sweetheart?” Hannah asked gently, her voice trembling slightly.
Sophia looked up at her with sudden excitement. Her bright eyes widened, and a radiant smile broke across her rosy face.
Before Hannah could even pour the juice, Sophia gripped the metal sides of her wheelchair and violently PUSHED herself upward. Nearby guests turned and gasped in horror. Luca whipped around in total shock as his daughter stood on trembling legs for the first time in three years. Her small knees shook violently, but her bright eyes were completely locked on the waitress across the ballroom.
“Sophia!” Luca shouted, his voice cracking with raw, emotional shock as he stepped forward.
A bodyguards instinctively rushed to help, but Sophia angrily thrust her hand out, pushing him away. Then, defying every medical diagnosis, every specialist, and every law of physics, she took one wobbly step. Then another. And suddenly, she began running across the polished marble floor.
The live orchestra instantly fell silent. The wealthy guests stared in absolute disbelief. Luca stretched his hands out toward her, his breath caught in his throat, but Sophia ran right past her terrified father.
