Chapter 42 - The Shadow of Aegis

Two weeks after Sophia’s departure, the philanthropic and corporate empire of the Moretti family was operating at peak efficiency. Hannah’s pediatric medical foundations had expanded into three new states, while Luca’s legitimate logistics and real estate holdings dominated the Midwestern market. They had successfully sterilized their wealth, leaving the bloody legacy of the Chicago mafia buried in the past. But immense wealth and pristine infrastructure always attracted a new breed of predators—predators who wore bespoke suits instead of tactical gear, and who hid behind the shield of government contracts.

The annual Global Health and Logistics Summit was held in a massive, glass-walled convention center overlooking Lake Michigan. Luca and Hannah attended as keynote speakers, projecting the ultimate image of untouchable power and profound compassion. As the evening transitioned into an exclusive VIP reception, the couple was approached by a man who radiated a slick, dangerous arrogance.

Director Sterling Blackwood was the CEO of the Aegis Group, a multi-billion-dollar private intelligence and military contracting firm based out of Washington D.C. He was in his late fifties, tall and impeccably groomed, with cold, reptilian eyes that analyzed everything in the room as a potential asset or a potential threat.

"Mr. and Mrs. Moretti," Blackwood smiled, offering a perfectly manicured hand. "A truly inspiring presentation. The sheer volume of medical supplies your foundation moves internationally is... staggering."

Luca shook the man’s hand briefly, his grip firm and unyielding. His predatory instincts, honed by decades in the underworld, flared instantly. He recognized the type of man Blackwood was—a vulture cloaked in bureaucratic legitimacy.

"We believe in efficiency, Director Blackwood," Luca replied, his voice a low, polite rumble that carried an unmistakable edge of warning. "Our supply lines are dedicated strictly to humanitarian aid."

"Of course," Blackwood nodded, taking a sip of his champagne. "But efficiency of that scale is a matter of national security. Aegis is currently expanding its overseas operations. We require immediate, unfettered access to your maritime logistics network. The government is willing to offer a highly lucrative contract to lease your shipping lanes."

Hannah stood tall beside her husband, her eyes narrowing with sharp, tactical brilliance. "Our shipping lanes are not for lease, Director. We do not transport weapons, private military personnel, or classified government assets. Our foundation is strictly medical."

Blackwood’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the cold arrogance bleeding through. "Mrs. Moretti, I don't think you understand the gravity of the request. Aegis does not ask twice. Your husband’s... colorful past... is a matter of public record. It would be a terrible shame if federal regulators suddenly found discrepancies in your foundation's tax records, forcing the government to seize those shipping lanes entirely."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Luca stepped forward, his massive frame completely eclipsing Blackwood’s personal space. The civilized billionaire vanished, replaced in a microsecond by the terrifying, blood-soaked king of the Chicago underworld.

"Let me make this perfectly clear, Blackwood," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, demonic intent. "You are not dealing with a politician. You are dealing with me. If you ever threaten my wife or my empire again, I will not wait for a federal audit. I will dismantle your life so completely that history won't even remember your name."

Blackwood stared into Luca’s freezing gray eyes, a flicker of genuine apprehension crossing his face before he masked it with a tight sneer. He backed away, adjusting his tie. "You are making a grave mistake, Moretti. The world has changed. Monsters like you are obsolete."

As Blackwood disappeared into the crowd, Hannah placed a steadying hand on Luca’s arm. "He won't stop, Luca. He's going to look for leverage."

Luca’s jaw clenched, his mind racing through every vulnerability he possessed. "Elias," Luca spoke into his encrypted watch. "Double the detail in Boston. Right now."
