Chapter 44 - The Ambush in the Alley

Sophia packed up her textbooks, offering Julian a warm, appreciative smile. "Thank you for the help, Julian. I actually feel like I might pass this mid-term now."

"My pleasure, Sophia," Julian smiled, standing up and holding the door open for her. "Can I walk you back to your dorm? It's getting pretty dark."

"I'll be fine, it's just a few blocks," Sophia replied politely, stepping out into the chilly night air.

"I insist," Julian said, his voice dropping slightly in pitch. The warm, disarming charm vanished in a microsecond, replaced by a cold, clinical precision. He stepped uncomfortably close to her, his hand grasping her elbow with an iron, inescapable grip. "We are going to take a shortcut."

Sophia’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. The sudden, terrifying shift in his demeanor triggered every survival instinct Luca and Elias had relentlessly drilled into her since childhood. She didn't scream. She didn't panic. She assessed the threat.

Julian pulled her aggressively toward a dark, narrow alleyway between the coffee shop and an adjacent parking garage. At the end of the alley, a black, unmarked van was idling, its side door sliding open to reveal two men in tactical gear.

"Let go of me," Sophia commanded, her voice dropping into the exact same lethal, authoritative register her father used.

"Don't make this difficult, Miss Moretti," Julian whispered, pulling a concealed syringe from his pocket. "Your father has something my boss wants. You are just the collateral."

Sophia didn't try to pull away. Instead, she leaned into his grip. Using the element of surprise, she drove the heavy, reinforced heel of her boot directly into Julian’s kneecap with shattering force.

Julian grunted in agonizing pain, his grip faltering for a fraction of a second. Sophia twisted her arm free, simultaneously driving the palm of her hand upward in a brutal, vicious strike to his nose. Blood sprayed across the brick wall as Julian stumbled backward, dropping the syringe.

Before Sophia could sprint toward the street, the two men from the van charged down the alley. She was outmatched, trapped between the operatives and the waiting vehicle.

Suddenly, the screech of tires echoed through the street. The unassuming gray sedan belonging to the Moretti security detail jumped the curb, smashing violently into the side of the Aegis van. Two elite Moretti guards poured out of the vehicle, weapons drawn, opening fire on the Aegis operatives.

The alley erupted into a chaotic, deafening firefight.

"Sophia! Get down!" the lead Moretti guard roared, laying down suppressing fire to keep the Aegis men pinned behind their van.

Sophia hit the wet pavement, covering her head as bullets chipped the brickwork around her. Julian, recovering from the blow to his face, pulled a suppressed pistol and fired blindly toward the street. The Moretti guard grunted, taking a hit to the shoulder, but he refused to yield, returning fire and dropping one of the Aegis men.

The sound of approaching police sirens finally broke the stalemate. Realizing the extraction had failed and their cover was blown, Julian cursed violently. He dragged his wounded comrade into the damaged van, tearing out of the alley and disappearing into the Boston night.

The Moretti guard rushed to Sophia, his shoulder bleeding heavily. "Are you hit, Miss Moretti?"

May you like

"I'm fine," Sophia gasped, her hands shaking with pure adrenaline as she stared at the empty alley. "Call my father. Tell him we are at war."
