Chapter 43 - The Trojan Horse

The historic, ivy-covered campus of Sophia’s Boston university was a haven of intellectual pursuit, far removed from the corporate battlegrounds of Chicago. Sophia was thriving. She loved the anonymity of the sprawling campus, the late-night study sessions in the Gothic libraries, and the vibrant, bustling energy of the city. She knew her father’s security team was hovering in the background, but they were professionals, keeping their distance and allowing her to experience the illusion of a normal collegiate life.

It was a crisp Thursday evening, and Sophia was sitting in a bustling off-campus coffee shop, intensely focused on a glowing laptop screen as she prepared for a macroeconomics mid-term.

"Is this seat taken?" a charming, smooth voice asked.

Sophia looked up. Standing beside her table was a young man, perhaps twenty-one, with striking features, perfectly styled dark hair, and a warm, disarming smile. He wore a casual but expensive cashmere sweater and held two cups of coffee.

"It's free," Sophia replied politely, shifting her textbooks slightly to make room.

"I'm Julian," he said, taking a seat and offering one of the coffees. "I saw you suffering over Professor Vance’s macro-econ syllabus from across the room. I took his class last year. I come bearing the gift of caffeine and profound sympathy."

Sophia chuckled, accepting the coffee. "Sophia. And thank you. He really expects us to memorize the entire global trade index by Monday."

Julian was incredibly charismatic. He spent the next hour helping her navigate the complex economic theories, effortlessly charming her with witty anecdotes and intelligent conversation. He didn't ask probing questions about her background, nor did he seem intimidated by the subtle aura of wealth she carried. He was the perfect, serendipitous college encounter.

Outside the coffee shop, parked in an unassuming gray sedan across the street, a member of the Moretti security detail watched the interaction through a high-powered lens. He ran Julian’s face through a facial recognition database linked to the Chicago server.

Back at the Moretti estate, Elias stood in the underground command center, his eyes locked onto the glowing monitors. The database took ninety seconds to process the image. When the result flashed on the screen, Elias’s blood ran completely cold.

Julian’s real name was Damien Cross. He was not a student. His academic records were fabricated military-grade forgeries. He was a highly trained operative on the payroll of the Aegis Group.

Blackwood had found his leverage.

"Boss," Elias said, hitting the emergency comms button that connected directly to Luca. "We have a critical breach in Boston. Aegis has planted a wolf right next to the heir."

"Extract her," Luca’s voice roared through the speaker, vibrating with sheer, unadulterated terror. "Pull her out right now!"

Before Elias could relay the order to the team in Boston, the live feed from the coffee shop security cameras flickered and went entirely black. The Aegis operatives had severed the connection. The trap had been sprung.
