Chapter 33 - The Queen's Defiance

Humiliated and enraged by the encounter in the corporate tower, Nikolai Volkov refused to retreat back to Europe. His ego could not process being spoken to like a subordinate by a man he deemed "domesticated." If Luca Moretti’s strength was his transition to the light, Nikolai decided the best way to break him was to attack the very foundation of that light: Hannah’s medical charities.

The Volkov Bratva utilized their deep pockets to orchestrate a silent, devastating strike. They didn't use guns or bombs; they used corporate espionage. Within forty-eight hours, the primary pharmaceutical supply chain feeding Hannah’s three major pediatric rehabilitation centers was mysteriously bought out by a shell company in Cyprus. Overnight, the delivery of essential medications, physical therapy equipment, and specialized pediatric neurotoxin antidotes was completely halted.

Hannah sat in her elegant, sunlit office at the flagship pediatric hospital, staring at the critical supply shortage report on her desk. She was currently four months pregnant, a small, beautiful bump beginning to show beneath her tailored navy-blue maternity suit. But the maternal glow did not soften the fierce, intelligent fire in her eyes.

"They have frozen millions of dollars in medical supplies in a warehouse in New Jersey, Mrs. Moretti," the hospital’s chief administrator said, his voice laced with panic. "The shell company is demanding an astronomical release fee. If we don't pay it, or find an alternative supplier within a week, the children in the ICU will suffer."

Luca, who had rushed to the hospital the moment he heard the news, stood furiously by the window. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. "It’s Nikolai Volkov," Luca growled, turning toward Hannah. "He is trying to force me to hand over the ports in exchange for your supplies. I’ll rip his head off his shoulders tonight."

"No, Luca," Hannah said calmly, her voice echoing with the absolute authority of a Queen. She stood up from her desk, her protective instincts overriding any fear. "If you kill him, you give him exactly what he wants—you prove that you are still a mob boss, and you bring the violence right back to our doorstep. I will not let a Russian thug undo years of our hard work."

Luca looked at his wife, awe mingling with his protective rage. "What do you want to do?"

"I want to ruin him legally, publicly, and completely," Hannah stated, her eyes narrowing with brilliant tactical precision. "He thinks he can use a shell company to extort a charity? He clearly hasn't researched my board of directors."

Within an hour, Hannah mobilized the full, terrifying weight of her legitimate empire. She didn't just call a few lawyers; she called the Governor, the Federal Trade Commission, and her vast network of billionaire philanthropists. She leaked the details of the Cypriot shell company’s extortion plot to three major national news networks, framing it not as a mafia dispute, but as a greedy foreign corporation holding dying American children hostage for profit.

By noon the next day, the story was a national scandal. The federal government, eager for a PR victory, immediately seized the New Jersey warehouse under emergency healthcare anti-extortion laws. The medical supplies were liberated and escorted directly to Chicago by federal marshals. Furthermore, the immense public outcry triggered a sweeping Interpol investigation into the Cypriot shell company, freezing hundreds of millions of dollars of Volkov assets across Europe.

Nikolai Volkov, watching the news from his high-end hotel suite in Chicago, threw his whiskey glass against the wall in a blind, screaming rage. He had tried to outsmart the mafia boss, only to be utterly financially devastated by the mafia boss's pregnant wife.
