Chapter 4 - The Traitor’s Trap

“Stay back, Luca!” Marcus barked, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. “I have a dozen men outside this ballroom! One twitch from me, and this entire room becomes a slaughterhouse! Drop to your knees!”

Marcus thought he held all the cards. He thought he was the smartest man in the room.

A slow, terrifying smile spread across Luca’s rugged face. He didn't drop to his knees. Instead, he raised two fingers and gave a single, sharp snap.

Click.

Instantly, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut and locked automatically from the outside. From the high balconies overlooking the dance floor, twenty elite syndicate enforcers in black tactical gear dropped down, their assault rifles instantly training their red laser sights directly onto Marcus’s chest, and onto every single one of his hidden confederates in the crowd.

Marcus’s face drained of all color. The gun in his hand began to shake violently. “What... what is this? I cleared the roster!”

“You cleared the regular security, Marcus,” Luca said smoothly, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. “Did you really think my inner circle didn't have an inner circle? Did you think I survived thirty years in this city by trusting a man who wears expensive suits and never gets his hands dirty?”

Marcus swung the gun toward Luca's head, screaming in panic, “I’ll kill you right now!”

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a suppressed gunshot cracked through the ballroom.

Thud.

A bullet pierced clean through Marcus’s right shoulder. The pistol slipped from his shattered hand, clattering against the marble floor. Marcus shrieked in agony, dropping to his knees, clutching his bleeding arm.

Luca walked up to the groveling traitor, standing over him like an executioner. He didn't use a gun. He raised his heavy, polished dress shoe and brought it down hard across Marcus’s face, sending the underboss crashing sideways onto the floor with a broken nose and shattered teeth.
