Chapter 5 - The Waitress’s Secret

As syndicate guards swarmed Marcus, dragging the screaming traitor out of the ballroom through a service exit, the heavy tension in the room slowly gave way to a stunned, emotional silence.
Luca turned around.
Hannah was still kneeling on the floor, gently stroking Sophia’s hair as the little girl giggled, completely unbothered by the violence, simply happy to be reunited with her favorite person.
Luca walked over, his massive frame softening. He knelt down beside them, his piercing gray eyes filled with a heavy, overwhelming gratitude he had never expected to feel toward a stranger.
“Hannah,” Luca said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “Tell me everything. How did you know Marcus? And how... how did you help my daughter walk?”
Hannah looked up, wiping a stray tear from her warm cheek. She took a deep, shaky breath.
“I wasn't always a waitress, Mr. Moretti,” Hannah began, her voice steadying. “Three years ago, I was a pediatric physical therapist working at the private clinic where Marcus secretly treated his elite associates. On the night of the attack... Marcus brought Sophia to our clinic. She wasn't paralyzed from the fall, Mr. Moretti. Marcus had injected her with a localized neurotoxin to fake a permanent spinal injury, ensuring she could never run, never testify, and never pose a threat if she remembered anything.”
Luca felt his heart stop. A cold, suffocating fury surged through his veins. They hadn't just tried to kill his family; they had chemically paralyzed a baby.
“When Marcus ordered me to dispose of her and keep her hidden in a safe house upstate,” Hannah continued, tears spilling over her lashes again, “I couldn't do it. I smuggled her out. I raised her in secret, loving her as my own, waiting for the day the antidote I secretly synthesized would finally take full effect. But I knew as long as Marcus was breathing, she wasn't safe. So I waited for the right moment, got a job catering this exact gala, knowing the antidote would wear off tonight... and praying she would find me.”
Luca stared at the brave, incredible woman kneeling before him. She had risked her life, hiding his daughter in plain sight for three agonizing years, protecting her from the monster living inside their own home.
Without a word, the feared mafia boss reached out and pulled Hannah into a fierce, emotional hug, burying his face in her shoulder.
