Chapter 31 - The Heir of the Light

Two more years had passed since the complete eradication of the Obsidian Syndicate’s remnants, bringing a profound, undisturbed era of prosperity to the Moretti family. The sprawling estate in the heart of Chicago’s elite suburbs had never felt more alive. It was the height of spring, and the meticulously manicured gardens were a riot of color. White roses, Hannah’s absolute favorite, bloomed with a fierce vibrancy alongside the cobblestone pathways, filling the crisp morning air with their sweet, intoxicating fragrance.

Sophia, now a brilliant, energetic ten-year-old, was a far cry from the fragile little girl who had once been bound to a tragic pink wheelchair. She possessed her mother’s warm, radiant smile and her father’s sharp, analytical mind. On this particular Saturday morning, she was sitting on the grass near the massive fountain, expertly training a new German Shepherd puppy while Bruno, the aging but fiercely loyal Cane Corso, watched from a patch of sunlight with a dignified, watchful gaze.

Inside the sunlit grand sunroom, Luca Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows. The former most feared mafia boss in Chicago wore a simple, tailored gray henley that stretched tight across his broad, muscular shoulders, the sleeves pushed up to reveal the intricate ink that mapped his dark past. Yet, there was no darkness in his piercing gray eyes today. He watched his daughter laugh as the puppy tumbled over its own paws, a deep, resonant warmth swelling in his chest. He had fought through hell, fire, and betrayal to secure this exact moment of peace.

"She has an incredible way with them, doesn't she?" a soft, melodic voice murmured from behind him.

Luca turned, his expression instantly melting into a look of pure, unadulterated adoration. Hannah walked into the sunroom, wearing a flowing, ivory linen dress that caught the morning light beautifully. She was no longer just the brave waitress who had caught a falling child; she was a billionaire philanthropist, the undisputed Queen of the city, and the absolute center of Luca’s universe. Her soft blonde-brown hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her eyes sparkled with a profound, secret joy.

Luca closed the distance between them, wrapping his massive arms securely around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. He leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her temple. "She gets her compassion entirely from you," he rumbled, his deep voice vibrating against her. "If she had my temperament, that puppy would be terrified of her."

Hannah laughed—a bright, musical sound that always managed to chase away whatever lingering ghosts haunted Luca’s memories. She rested her hands flat against his broad chest, looking up into his eyes. Her smile softened, transforming into something deeply intimate and overwhelmingly emotional.

"Luca," Hannah whispered, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of excitement and awe. "I had a meeting with Dr. Evans at the clinic yesterday. Not for the foundation's budget... but for me."

Luca’s protective instincts flared instantly. His grip tightened slightly on her waist, his gray eyes scanning her beautiful face for any sign of illness or distress. "Are you alright? Is everything okay? If something is wrong, we’ll fly in the best specialists in the world."

"I am perfectly healthy, Luca," Hannah reassured him quickly, tears of pure joy welling up in her expressive eyes. She slowly took his massive, heavily tattooed hand and moved it down, pressing his palm gently against her lower abdomen. "We are both perfectly healthy."

For a man who had survived assassination attempts, dismantled global crime syndicates, and commanded absolute authority over the criminal underworld, Luca Moretti was suddenly rendered completely speechless. His breath caught in his throat. His sharp gray eyes widened in absolute shock as he looked from her stomach up to her tear-filled, smiling eyes.

"Hannah...?" Luca breathed, his voice cracking with raw, unfiltered emotion. "Are you saying...?"

"You are going to be a father again, Luca," Hannah whispered, a brilliant tear slipping down her cheek. "We are having a baby."

The mighty, terrifying Lion of Chicago fell to his knees right there in the sunroom. He pressed his face against Hannah's stomach, his broad shoulders shaking as an overwhelming wave of gratitude, love, and redemption washed over his entire soul. He had spent his early life believing he was a monster meant only for the dark. But here, in the radiant light of his wife's love, he was being given the greatest gift a man could ever receive. He wrapped his arms around her legs, holding her as if she were the most precious, fragile treasure on earth, vowing silently that he would burn the entire world down before he ever let a single shadow touch this new life.
