Chapter 11 - The Black Envelope

The crisp autumn wind swept through the immaculate gardens of the Moretti estate, carrying the scent of blooming white roses and fallen oak leaves. Six months had passed since the terrifying night at the Chicago charity gala. Six months since Hannah Carter had dropped her silver tray, caught a running little girl, and completely altered the destiny of the city's most feared mafia boss.
Inside the sunlit living room, absolute peace reigned. Sophia, no longer confined to the tragic pink wheelchair, was sprinting across the Persian rugs with boundless, infectious energy. Her bright golden-brown curls bounced as she chased Bruno, the massive Cane Corso, filling the grand halls with genuine, unadulterated joy.
Hannah stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater. She watched her husband, Luca Moretti, sitting on the edge of the plush velvet sofa. The tall, heavily tattooed syndicate leader was completely entirely immobilized by his daughter, who was currently forcing him to wear a plastic pink tiara. Luca’s piercing gray eyes, once cold and hollowed out by grief, were now warm, bright, and completely devoted to the two women who had saved his soul.
Everything was perfect. It was a fortress of love and impenetrable security.
Until the heavy oak doors of the grand foyer slowly swung open.
Elias, Luca’s newly appointed chief of security, walked into the room. His usually stoic, unreadable face was pale, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his neck strained. He didn't speak immediately. He walked directly toward Luca, bypassing the playful scene on the rug, and held out a sleek, unmarked black envelope.
"Boss," Elias whispered, his voice dangerously low. "This was just delivered to the front gate. The courier was a ghost. No plates, no face on the cameras. But he explicitly said it was for the Queen."
Luca’s smile vanished instantly. The warmth in his gray eyes shattered, replaced by the lethal, subterranean coldness of a king whose territory had just been breached. He slowly removed the plastic tiara from his head and stood up, his massive muscular frame casting a long, terrifying shadow across the room.
Hannah felt her heart skip a beat. The peaceful illusion of their morning evaporated into thin air. She walked over, her hands trembling slightly as she reached for the black envelope.
"Don't open it, Hannah," Luca warned, his voice a low, protective rumble.
"If it's addressed to me, Luca, I need to see it," Hannah replied steadily, channeling the same courage she used when she hid his paralyzed daughter from the world for three agonizing years.
She broke the wax seal. Inside was a single, high-resolution photograph.
Hannah pulled it out, and the breath completely left her lungs. Her blood turned to liquid ice. The photograph was of Sophia. But it wasn't an old picture. It was a picture of Sophia sleeping in her bed, clutching her teddy bear.
The timestamp in the corner of the photo indicated it was taken at 3:00 AM. Last night. From inside their impenetrable, heavily guarded estate.
On the back of the photo, a message was written in elegant, blood-red ink: "Marcus Vance was only a minor pawn in our grand design. The true empire belongs to the Obsidian Syndicate. We are coming to collect our throne."

Luca looked over Hannah's shoulder, reading the words. The sheer, unadulterated fury that radiated from his body was enough to suffocate the entire room. Someone had stood over his sleeping child in the dead of night.
👉 The nightmare they thought was buried has returned, but what horrifying discovery is waiting for Luca inside the maximum-security federal prison?
