Chapter 39 - The Crown Wears No Shadow

The grand christening of Leo Moretti was an event that the city of Chicago would whisper about for years to come.

It was held at the historic cathedral downtown, the stained-glass windows throwing brilliant, kaleidoscopic patterns of light across the polished marble floors. The pews were not filled with mafia captains, corrupted politicians, or silent enforcers. They were filled with the people who represented the true legacy of the Moretti empire—top pediatric surgeons, philanthropists, families whose children had been saved by Hannah’s foundations, and the fiercely loyal inner circle of guards who had transitioned into legitimate protectors.

At the front of the altar, Luca stood tall and immensely proud, wearing a classic black tuxedo. Beside him stood Hannah, breathtaking in a tailored, pale blue silk dress, holding little Leo in a traditional white christening gown. Sophia stood right next to her mother, holding a small bouquet of white roses, beaming with absolute pride.

Elias, looking remarkably solemn and dignified, stood as the baby’s godfather. He promised, with a vow that carried the weight of absolute, lethal sincerity, to protect the child from the evils of the world.

As the priest sprinkled the holy water over Leo’s forehead, the baby let out a tiny, soft coo, reaching his hands up toward the colorful light filtering through the stained glass.

Luca looked at his wife. He remembered the terrifying night, years ago at the charity gala, when he thought his entire world was broken beyond repair. He remembered the desperate rage, the paralyzing fear, and the miraculous moment a simple waitress dropped a silver tray and saved his daughter's life.

That woman had not just saved his daughter. She had saved him. She had taken a man drowning in violence and shown him that true power was not the ability to destroy, but the capacity to heal, to build, and to love unconditionally.

Following the ceremony, the estate hosted a magnificent, sun-drenched reception. The expansive lawns were covered in white tents, live classical music drifted on the warm summer breeze, and the air was filled with genuine, unburdened laughter.

Hannah walked away from the crowd for a brief moment, stepping onto the private rear veranda overlooking the rose gardens. She gently rocked Leo in her arms, enjoying a quiet moment of absolute peace.

She felt the familiar, comforting warmth of Luca’s chest as he stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, looking down at their sleeping son.

"I was just thinking about the gala," Hannah murmured softly, leaning her head back against him. "If I hadn't tripped and dropped that apple juice... if Sophia hadn't run toward me... where would we be right now?"

"We would have found each other," Luca stated with absolute, unshakable conviction. "In this life, or the next. The universe wouldn't have let me exist without you, Hannah. You are my compass."

Hannah smiled, turning her head to press a soft kiss to his cheek. "We built an empire, Luca. Not with guns, but with this." She gestured to the beautiful, peaceful celebration happening across their lawns.

"You built it, my Queen," Luca corrected softly. "I just guarded the gates."
