Chapter 15 - The Sins of the Past

The underground soundproof interrogation room beneath the Moretti estate was bathed in harsh, unforgiving fluorescent light.
The captured mercenary sat strapped tightly to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room. His tactical mask had been stripped away, revealing a scarred, hardened face. He was bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead, breathing heavily as he stared defiantly at the man standing in the shadows.
Luca Moretti slowly stepped into the light, rolling up the sleeves of his black dress shirt to reveal his muscular, tattooed forearms. The air in the room was thick with a suffocating, lethal intent.
Hannah stood safely behind the reinforced two-way glass mirror, watching her husband work. She felt no pity for the man tied to the chair. He had come to murder innocent children to get to her.
"You are going to tell me exactly who ordered the hit on my wife," Luca stated, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that promised unspeakable pain. "You are going to give me a name, a location, and a motive."
The mercenary spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete floor and laughed—a harsh, mocking sound.
"You think you scare me, Moretti?" the mercenary sneered. "You are just a local thug playing king. The Obsidian Syndicate owns half the politicians in this country. They funded Marcus Vance. They funded your competitors. And the man leading them... he has a very personal score to settle with your family."
Luca closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbing the mercenary by the throat with a grip that could crush steel.
"Give me the name," Luca demanded, his gray eyes burning with pure, unadulterated rage.
The mercenary gasped for air, his face turning a dark shade of purple under Luca's iron grip. "His name... is Arthur Sterling," the man choked out. "The CEO of Vanguard Holdings. The true head of the Obsidian Syndicate."
Luca’s grip faltered for a microsecond. His entire body went rigid. The name struck him like a physical blow to the chest.
Arthur Sterling was a ghost. He was the legendary, ruthless business magnate who had partnered with Luca’s father thirty years ago to build the original Chicago syndicate. Everyone in the underground world believed Arthur had died in a tragic plane crash two decades ago.
"Arthur Sterling is dead," Luca growled, tightening his grip again.
"Arthur never died," the mercenary wheezed, a sick smile twisting his bloody lips. "He faked his death to build his empire from the shadows. And he didn't just order the hit on your wife today, Luca. Arthur was the one who ordered the hit on your home three years ago. Marcus Vance was just following Arthur's direct orders when they paralyzed your daughter."
