Chapter 36 - The Golden Checkmate

The rain poured down on the industrial district of Chicago, turning the cracked pavement into slick mirrors reflecting the orange glow of streetlamps. Nikolai Volkov’s heavily guarded safehouse was an abandoned meatpacking plant on the edge of the river. It was fortified like a military bunker, surrounded by a high chain-link fence, barbed wire, and over forty heavily armed Bratva mercenaries patrolling the perimeter.

Nikolai sat inside the rusted office overlooking the main warehouse floor, pacing furiously like a trapped animal. The botched kidnapping had been a catastrophic failure. He knew Luca Moretti would retaliate, and he had ordered his men to shoot on sight. He expected an army of masked Italian mobsters to come crashing through the doors with machine guns blazing.

But Luca Moretti didn’t bring an army. And he didn't break down the door.

At exactly midnight, a single, immaculate black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the front gate of the meatpacking plant.

The Russian guards aimed their assault rifles at the vehicle, shouting in Russian. But the driver didn't panic. The rear door opened, and Luca stepped out into the freezing rain. He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wasn't carrying a visible weapon. He was dressed in a flawless, bespoke black tuxedo, holding a sleek black umbrella over his head.

He walked slowly, deliberately toward the heavy steel gates, completely alone.

"Stop right there, Moretti!" the lead Russian guard yelled, pressing his rifle against the chain-link fence. "I'll blow your head off!"

Luca didn't stop. He walked right up to the gate, looking the guard dead in the eye.

"Check your phone," Luca said calmly.

The guard frowned, confused. But a second later, his burner phone buzzed. And then every single mercenary's phone in the courtyard buzzed simultaneously. The Russian guard pulled his phone from his pocket, his eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock.

The encrypted message displayed a live bank transfer. Ten million dollars had just been deposited into an offshore account in the guard's name. Attached was a simple text: The Volkovs are dead. Walk away tonight, and you keep the money. Stay, and you die with them.

Luca Moretti had not come to fight a war. He had used his vast, legitimate billionaire wealth to simply buy the entire battlefield.

The Russian guard looked at the massive, terrifying man standing in the rain, then looked down at the unimaginable wealth on his screen. He slowly lowered his rifle. Without a word, he turned his back on the compound and walked away into the dark. One by one, every single mercenary in the courtyard followed suit, abandoning their posts, choosing early retirement over a senseless death.

Luca pushed the heavy iron gate open. It creaked loudly as he stepped into the deserted courtyard.

Up in the rusted office, Nikolai watched the monitors in absolute horror. His invincible army had evaporated into the night without a single shot being fired. He was completely, utterly alone.

The heavy metal doors of the warehouse shrieked open. Luca walked across the concrete floor, his polished shoes echoing ominously in the cavernous, empty space. He didn't rush. He didn't yell. He walked up the metal grated stairs leading to the office, his presence radiating an overwhelming, suffocating dread.

Nikolai scrambled backward, pulling his pistol and aiming it at the door.

The office door swung open. Luca stood there, shaking the rain from his umbrella. He looked at the trembling Russian mobster, the man who had dared to threaten his pregnant wife and target his daughter.

"You wanted to see the monster, Nikolai," Luca whispered, stepping into the room. "You should have stayed in Europe."
