Chapter 32 - The Wolves of Winter

While the Moretti estate celebrated the joyous news of a new heir, the underworld of Chicago, which Luca had painstakingly sterilized, was beginning to feel the pressure of a dangerous vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum, and the global criminal landscape was no different. With the Obsidian Syndicate permanently erased and the Moretti empire completely transitioned into legitimate logistics, real estate, and philanthropy, foreign predators began to look at the lucrative, undefended ports of Chicago with greedy, hungry eyes.

Enter the Volkov Bratva.

Originating from the freezing, unforgiving streets of St. Petersburg, the Volkov brothers had built a ruthless, bloody empire across Eastern Europe. Nikolai Volkov, the eldest and most violently ambitious of the three, had recently turned his sights toward North America. He was a tall, skeletal man with pale skin, dead blue eyes, and a face marred by a jagged knife scar that ran from his ear to his jawline. Nikolai viewed Luca’s transition into legitimate business not as a tactical evolution, but as a pathetic, cowardly surrender. He believed the great Luca Moretti had gone soft, domesticated by a waitress and a little girl.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Nikolai Volkov decided to test the waters. He bypassed the usual underground channels and walked directly into the gleaming, glass-and-steel skyscraper of Moretti Enterprises in downtown Chicago. Flanked by four massive, heavily armed Russian enforcers, Nikolai demanded a meeting with the CEO.

Elias, Luca’s stoic and intensely loyal head of security, intercepted them in the luxurious penthouse reception area. Elias’s hand rested casually over his tailored suit jacket, his eyes locked onto the Russians with lethal, professional calm.

"Mr. Moretti does not take unannounced meetings," Elias stated, his voice flat and entirely unyielding. "Especially not with men who track mud onto my marble floors."

Nikolai sneered, stepping forward and invading Elias’s personal space. "Tell your boss that the Wolves of Winter are here. And we are here to discuss the management of the South Side shipping terminals. He can either speak to me now, or I can start burning his little legitimate warehouses to the ground."

Before Elias could draw his weapon and end the Russian's life right there in the lobby, the heavy mahogany doors to the executive boardroom clicked open.

Luca Moretti stood in the doorway. He wore an immaculate, dark tailored suit that emphasized his imposing, monolithic frame. He did not look angry. He did not look intimidated. He looked at Nikolai Volkov with the cold, detached boredom of a king observing a particularly annoying insect.

"Let him in, Elias," Luca said smoothly, his deep voice echoing across the silent reception area.

Nikolai smirked triumphantly, adjusting his expensive coat, and strutted into the boardroom. His four bodyguards attempted to follow, but Elias stepped seamlessly into their path, blocking the door. Luca shut the heavy wooden doors, trapping Nikolai inside the soundproof room alone with him.

Nikolai’s smirk faltered slightly as he realized he was now entirely cut off from his muscle. He looked around the opulent boardroom, taking in the panoramic view of the Chicago skyline.

"Beautiful city," Nikolai said, attempting to regain his arrogant composure. "But it is wasted on a man who prefers charity galas over absolute power. I am here to make you a generous offer, Moretti. Hand over the South Side shipping terminals to my organization. You keep your clean image, and we take over the import taxes. A mutually beneficial arrangement."

Luca walked slowly toward the head of the massive glass table, pouring himself a glass of sparkling water. He didn't offer one to Nikolai.

"I don't do business with the Bratva," Luca stated, his tone chillingly polite. "My ports are legitimate. My cargo is clean. I don't move weapons, and I don't move narcotics. Your presence in this city is a direct violation of the peace I have established."

"Peace is an illusion for weak men!" Nikolai slammed his fist on the glass table. "You think because you married a peasant girl and put your daughter in private school that your past is erased? We are taking those ports, Moretti. If you stand in our way, we will show you what real violence looks like. We will bleed your legitimate businesses dry."

Luca slowly set his glass down. He looked up, his gray eyes suddenly turning into chips of absolute, freezing ice. The aura of the civilized CEO vanished in a microsecond, replaced entirely by the terrifying, blood-soaked monster that had conquered the city a decade ago.

"You are breathing right now only because my wife asked me to stop leaving bodies in the street," Luca whispered, his voice a low, subterranean rumble that made Nikolai’s blood run instantly cold. "Get out of my city, Volkov. If I see your face again, I won't just take your life. I will dismantle your entire bloodline."

May you like

Nikolai swallowed hard, his bravado shattering under the weight of Luca’s sheer, terrifying presence. He turned and hurried out of the boardroom, realizing too late that the Lion of Chicago hadn't lost his teeth; he had simply learned to keep them hidden.
