Chapter 1 - A Brutal Display Of Power Inside The Ballroom

The Beaumont Private Country Club Grand Easter Ballroom was a masterclass in suffocating opulence. The air was thick with the scent of white-and-gold Easter flowers, interwoven with the intoxicating aroma of expensive champagne and designer perfumes. Towering crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, golden glow over the cream marble floor. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of wealth, a gathering of the elite where fortunes were flaunted and power was silently exchanged. Instead, it was rapidly descending into a theater of cruelty.
Claire Beaumont stood near a lavish champagne station, her delicate features pale and drawn. Her large hazel eyes, usually bright and expressive, darted nervously toward the reinforced oak doors at the far end of the room. She wore a breathtaking lavender Easter dress that flowed elegantly around her slender frame, but the beauty of the garment was lost on her. She was trembling. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, erratic breaths as she clutched her cracked smartphone tightly against her side.
"You really thought you could hide it from me?" a cold, smooth voice hissed near her ear.
Preston Beaumont stepped into her personal space. He was an exceptionally handsome man, his tall athletic build wrapped perfectly in a tailored navy linen suit and an open white shirt that revealed the smooth, tanned skin of his chest. His pale-blue eyes, usually charming to the public, were now sharp and devoid of humanity. A heavy platinum watch gleamed on his wrist as he reached out, his manicured fingers wrapping around Claire's upper arm like a steel vice.
"Preston, please," Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "People are looking. You're hurting me."
"Let them look," Preston sneered, his grip tightening until Claire let out a sharp gasp. "They know who owns them. They know who pays for this marble they walk on. You actually thought you could call him? After everything I told you?"
"I didn't call anyone! I swear!" Claire pleaded, a tear escaping her eye and rolling down her flawless cheek.
"Liar," Preston spat.
Without warning, Preston’s hand shot up and entwined violently into Claire’s long chestnut waves. He gripped her hair at the roots and yanked her backward. Claire screamed, a sound of pure terror that sliced through the gentle string quartet playing in the background. Her lavender dress swirled as she lost her balance, one of her elegant heels snapping off and skittering across the cream marble.
"Preston, stop! Please!" Claire sobbed, stumbling barefoot on one side as Preston began to literally drag her across the floor.
The reaction of the elite guests was a sickening display of complicity. Dozens of wealthy men and women in couture gowns and tailored tuxedos simply stepped back, recoiling from the violence to protect their expensive shoes. They murmured in hushed, nervous tones, but nobody moved to intervene. They simply watched as Preston dragged his beautiful wife between the lavishly decorated banquet tables.
From the corner of the room, Vivienne Beaumont watched the scene unfold with cold, detached eyes. The glamorous sixty-six-year-old matriarch wore an emerald couture cocktail dress dripping with heavy sapphire jewelry. Her immaculate silver-blonde hair didn't move an inch as she sipped her champagne.
"Stand up straight, Claire," Vivienne muttered under her breath, her sharp blue eyes flashing with irritation. "You are making a pathetic scene. Stop crying this instant."
Not far from Vivienne stood Sheriff Raymond Pike. The imposing fifty-five-year-old lawman, wearing a tan sheriff jacket over a crisp white dress shirt, leaned against a marble pillar. His heavy build and thick mustache gave him an air of authority, but his actions betrayed his corruption. He held a crystal champagne glass in his hand, watching Preston abuse his wife with absolute apathy.
"Shouldn't you intervene, Sheriff?" a nervous guest whispered to Pike.
"Mr. Beaumont is just having a domestic disagreement," Pike replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "It’s not police business. Let the man handle his wife."
Preston dragged Claire closer to the center of the ballroom, his polished Hollywood appearance contrasting horrifically with his barbaric actions. "You are never leaving me, Claire," he growled, looking down at her terrified face. "You belong to this family. You belong to me."

But just as Preston prepared to yank her to her feet, a deafening sound echoed through the massive room.
BANG.
