Chapter 9 - A Hidden Threat Emerges From The Locked Shadows

The sudden, violent strobing of the crimson emergency lights sent the Beaumont Private Country Club ballroom into absolute pandemonium. The harsh, mechanical siren blaring from the Emergency Security Panel cut through the air like a physical blade. The wealthy guests, already pushed to the brink of their sanity, completely fractured. Some screamed, covering their ears, while others dropped to the cream marble floor in pure terror.
Marcus Reed didn't flinch, but his tactical mind instantly analyzed the horrifying shift in the environment. He released the earpiece, his jaw clenching tight beneath his immaculate gray beard.
"Dad, what's happening?" Claire asked, her voice trembling as she grabbed the sleeve of his faded olive field jacket. "Why is the alarm changing?"
"Someone has overridden the external security perimeter," Marcus replied, his voice dangerously low. He quickly positioned himself between Claire and the massive reinforced oak doors. "The federal teams aren't responding. Someone else has breached the estate."
Vivienne Beaumont let out a chilling, hysterical laugh from the center of the room. She stood over her weeping son, her glamorous silver-blonde hair now wildly disheveled. "I told you, Marcus! I told you they wouldn't let this happen! The cartel monitors the estate's security feed! If the servers go down, they send the cleaners!"
"Shut your mouth, Vivienne!" Marcus barked, his steel-blue eyes scanning the massive room for secondary exits. But the Black Code he initiated had sealed everything perfectly. The irony was suffocating; the impenetrable fortress he created to trap the Beaumonts was now trapping him and his daughter with an unknown, highly lethal force closing in from the outside.
Sheriff Pike, still bleeding profusely on the floor, began to laugh a wet, gurgling laugh. "You locked us in a slaughterhouse, Reed. The cleaners don't leave witnesses. They'll kill every single person in this room to protect the ledgers."
The state senators and corporate CEOs heard the sheriff's words. Panic evolved into a frantic, animalistic stampede. Men in tailored tuxedos began throwing heavy wooden chairs against the reinforced glass windows, only to have the chairs bounce off the bulletproof panes. Women in couture gowns clawed at the locked service doors, their expensive manicures breaking against the unyielding steel.
Marcus ignored the chaos. He reached to his lower back, pulling a compact, matte-black tactical sidearm from a concealed holster beneath his dark denim. He racked the slide with a sharp, metallic CLACK that briefly pierced the siren's noise.
"Claire, get behind the overturned banquet table," Marcus ordered, his voice echoing with absolute command. "Do not move, do not stand up, and do not look at the doors."
"Dad, I'm not leaving you," Claire cried, her hazel eyes wide with fear as she looked at the gun.
"Move!" Marcus roared, a terrifying flash of parental desperation breaking through his cold facade.
Claire flinched, then immediately obeyed. She scrambled in her torn lavender dress, diving behind the thick wooden table Preston had crashed into earlier. She huddled among the broken crystal and crushed white-and-gold Easter flowers, covering her head with her arms.
Marcus turned his weapon toward the heavy, reinforced oak doors at the entrance. The siren blared relentlessly. The red lights strobed.
Then, a new sound emerged.
THUD.
Something heavy and metallic struck the outside of the grand ballroom doors. It wasn't a police battering ram. It sounded like heavy industrial breaching equipment.
THUD.
The massive oak doors shuddered violently in their reinforced steel frames. Dust fell from the towering crystal chandeliers above.
Preston Beaumont scrambled backward across the cream marble, his pale-blue eyes locked on the doors in absolute horror. "They're going to kill us all!" he shrieked.
Marcus planted his worn brown boots firmly on the marble floor, taking a two-handed tactical stance. He aimed the tritium sights of his pistol directly at the center of the massive doors. His breathing slowed. His heart rate dropped. The federal commander prepared to wage a one-man war against whatever nightmare was trying to break inside.

CRACK.
The third strike splintered the heavy oak. The deadbolts groaned under unimaginable pressure. The doors were about to give way.
