Chapter 36 - A Dance of Blades in the Dark

Deep within the suffocating, humid bowels of the cargo ship, El Sombra was transforming the narrow, rusted corridors into a canvas of absolute slaughter. The phantom of the underworld moved without a sound, his heavy black rain slicker absorbing the dim, flickering emergency lights. A rapid-response team of eight heavily armored cartel mercenaries had been dispatched to the lower decks to investigate the breach. They swept the flooded corridors with blinding tactical flashlights, entirely unaware that the apex predator was clinging to the rusted grating of the ceiling directly above their heads.

As the rearguard separated slightly from the formation to check an empty boiler room, El Sombra dropped from the shadows like a falling leaf. He wrapped a steel garrote wire around the mercenary's throat, twisting with bone-snapping torque that ended the man's life before his brain could even register the ambush. Lowering the corpse silently to the grated floor, El Sombra drew his twin matte-black combat knives. He didn't unholster his firearms; the claustrophobic confines of the ship's underbelly were the perfect theater for the lethal, close-quarters art he had perfected over decades. He stepped out of the shadows, directly into the center of the squad.

The devastation lasted less than thirty seconds. El Sombra’s blades found the microscopic gaps in their Kevlar armor with surgical perfection, severing motor nerves, tendons, and arteries in a mesmerizing blur of violence. The panicked mercenaries fired wildly, their bullets ricocheting off the steel bulkheads, inadvertently gunning down their own men in the dark. El Sombra danced through the crossfire, a machine of remorseless execution, repaying the blood debt he owed Marcus Reed for sparing his life ten years ago. As the final mercenary collapsed with a gurgling gasp, El Sombra flicked the blood from his blades. He looked up toward the ceiling, hearing the muffled chaos on the deck above. "The path is clear, Commander," the assassin whispered to himself, stepping over the bodies and moving toward the bridge.
