Chapter 44 - Blood in the Canopy

The jungle was pitch black, alive with the sounds of shrieking insects and rustling palm leaves. The Architect’s strike team moved with terrifying silence, spreading out in a perfect fan formation as they closed in on the bunker coordinates. They wore advanced thermal-optic goggles, expecting to find their targets cowering in the subterranean concrete. But Marcus Reed didn't build fortresses to hide in; he built them as bait. The federal commander, his daughter, and the world's deadliest assassin were not in the bunker. They were fifty feet above, secured in the thick, interlocking branches of the jungle canopy, waiting for the trap to spring.
The lead mercenary signaled a halt, spotting the camouflaged entrance to the bunker. He raised a breaching charge, stepping forward into a clearing. El Sombra was the first to strike. From the darkness of the trees, a razor-sharp steel throwing knife plummeted silently, sinking deep into the gap between the mercenary's helmet and his body armor. The man collapsed without a sound. Before the rest of the squad could react to the silent kill, Marcus opened fire. His suppressed assault rifle spat rhythmic, controlled bursts of lethal accuracy. Three more mercenaries dropped instantly, their thermal optics shattering under the armor-piercing rounds. Chaos erupted in the jungle.
The mercenaries returned fire, blindly sweeping the canopy with automatic weapons. Bark and leaves rained down like shrapnel. Claire was pinned behind the thick trunk of a mahogany tree. She controlled her breathing, ignoring the deafening roar of the gunfire. She peered through her night-vision scope, spotting a heavy gunner flanking her father’s position. The man was raising a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. Claire didn't hesitate. She didn't shake. She placed the illuminated crosshairs directly over the gunner's chest, exhaled slowly, and squeezed the trigger. The heavy round crossed the distance in a millisecond, striking the gunner dead center. He crumpled backward, the unfired RPG clattering into the mud. Marcus glanced over at his daughter through the branches, a surge of terrifying pride echoing in his chest. The girl who had been broken on the cream marble was gone. A warrior had taken her place.
