Chapter 45 - The Phantom's Sacrifice

Despite the flawless ambush, The Architect’s forces were simply too massive. A secondary wave of fifty mercenaries poured into the jungle from the southern ridge, armed with heavy incendiary weapons. Brilliant orange flames began to lick the jungle canopy, forcing Marcus, Claire, and El Sombra to abandon their elevated positions. They rappelled down into the thick smoke, moving as a synchronized, lethal unit toward the island's hidden extraction point—a subterranean hangar housing an old, rugged twin-engine seaplane. The heat of the burning jungle was suffocating, the air thick with ash and the metallic scent of blood.
They reached the hangar doors, but a squad of mercenaries had already breached the perimeter. Heavy machine-gun fire pinned them behind a massive volcanic rock outcropping. "Get the plane started!" El Sombra roared over the deafening gunfire, his trench coat singed and smoking. The scarred assassin drew his twin combat knives, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. "I will hold the bottleneck! Go!" Marcus grabbed El Sombra's shoulder, his grip like a vice. "We leave together, Phantom." But El Sombra shook his head, a dark, bloody smile touching his lips. "My war ended ten years ago, Commander. Yours is just beginning. Make them bleed."
Without waiting for permission, El Sombra charged directly into the line of fire, moving with blinding, suicidal speed. He threw himself into the mercenary squad, a whirling dervish of blades and death, absorbing multiple gunshot wounds but refusing to fall. His psychotic fury drew every single gun toward him, buying Marcus the precious seconds he needed. Marcus hauled Claire into the hangar, throwing her into the co-pilot seat of the seaplane before smashing the emergency launch button. As the plane's twin engines roared to life and it launched down the hidden rail into the ocean, Claire looked back through the window. A massive, catastrophic explosion rocked the hangar bay. El Sombra had detonated the bunker’s main fuel reserves, taking the entire mercenary battalion to hell with him. Tears finally streamed down Claire's face, mourning the monster who had traded his life for hers.
