Chapter 39 - Rebirth in the Ashes

As Preston's scream faded into the churning Atlantic, the heavy steel door leading to the bridge violently kicked open. Alejandro, bleeding heavily from his thigh, limped out onto the deck, flanked by his four remaining elite bodyguards. They raised their assault rifles, the laser sights cutting through the rain, locking onto Marcus and Claire. "You destroyed my empire, Reed!" Alejandro screamed, his face twisted in unhinged malice. "I am going to peel the flesh from your bones!"
But before a single trigger could be pulled, the shadows behind the cartel boss rippled. El Sombra rose from the stairwell like a manifestation of death itself. With a violent, fluid motion, the assassin wrapped a razor-wire garrote around the neck of the rearguard, snapping him backward into the dark. In that exact fraction of a second, Marcus reacted. The federal commander dropped to the deck, scooped up the single live bullet he had ejected moments earlier, and slammed it into the chamber of a rifle dropped by one of the men he had beaten. Marcus didn't aim; he simply trusted decades of muscle memory. He fired a single, deafening shot. The heavy round struck Alejandro perfectly between the eyes, dropping the cartel boss instantly and severing the head of the snake once and for all. The three remaining bodyguards panicked, turning their weapons backward, but El Sombra had already completed his dance of blades, neutralizing them in complete, bloody silence.
A heavy stillness finally settled over the colossal ship, broken only by the steady drum of the rain against the steel. El Sombra wiped his blades and stepped into the light. "I have sabotaged the engines and destroyed their long-range comms," the scarred assassin reported, his voice a metallic rasp. "It will take the Coast Guard days to find this floating tomb. And with the decrypted ledgers currently flooding global intelligence servers, Director Vance is likely already in federal custody." The war was over. The corruption had been violently excised. Marcus looked at the phantom who had fought by his side, nodding in deep, silent respect. An alliance forged in blood and mutual betrayal had just balanced the scales of justice.
