Chapter 43 - Echoes in the Jungle

Three weeks passed on the volcanic island. The blistering heat and suffocating humidity became the crucible in which Claire Reed was entirely remade. Marcus and El Sombra did not treat her like a victim; they treated her like a raw recruit entering a meat grinder. From the moment the sun rose to the dead of night, Claire was subjected to grueling tactical drills. She learned how to strip and reassemble a rifle blindfolded. She learned how to clear corners, how to fight with a combat knife, and how to control her breathing when her muscles screamed in agony. The bruises on her arms multiplied, but the fire in her hazel eyes burned with the intensity of a dying star. She was no longer running from the darkness; she was learning how to become it.
It was 0300 hours when the island’s outer perimeter proximity sensors silently triggered. Marcus was awake instantly, his combat instincts flaring. He sat up in his cot, his hand instantly wrapping around the grip of his sidearm. A red light pulsed softly above the bunker's reinforced door. El Sombra dropped from the ceiling rafters, fully geared, his scarred face tightening into a lethal scowl. "Amphibious breach," the assassin rasped, checking the thermal feeds on a localized datapad. "Four rigid-hull inflatable boats on the northern beach. Thermal imaging shows forty hostiles moving through the jungle. Suppressed weapons. Night-vision optics. They move like elite operators, not cartel thugs."
Claire slid out of her bunk, pulling on a black tactical vest and racking the slide of her assault rifle. The fear that used to paralyze her in the Beaumont estate was entirely absent. She felt the heavy weight of the weapon, her father’s training taking complete control of her central nervous system. "They found us," Claire whispered, her voice steady and icy. Marcus slapped a fresh magazine into his rifle, his steel-blue eyes locking onto his daughter. "The Architect," Marcus growled, recognizing the tactical precision of the advancing strike team. "They want a war in the dark. Let’s show them what lives in the shadows."
