Chapter 32 - The Underground Inferno

Deep beneath the National Command Authority headquarters, the massive server core had transformed into a blazing slaughterhouse. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the sterile, climate-controlled silence, tearing through multi-million-dollar mainframes and sending showers of blinding electrical sparks cascading into the aisles. Marcus Reed stood like an immovable monument behind a shattered steel console. Blood seeped from a graze on his bicep, staining his torn olive field jacket, but his steel-blue eyes betrayed absolutely zero pain. He had ordered Claire to the roof, fully believing the loyalist extraction team was waiting for her, entirely unaware that his daughter had just been swallowed by a new nightmare.
Beside him, El Sombra—the Phantom of the underworld—fought with a terrifying, primal fury. The scarred assassin’s face was illuminated by the flashing red emergency lights as he shrugged off two grazing bullet wounds to his shoulder. He moved like a scythe through wheat, firing a submachine gun one-handed while his pitch-black combat knife severed the arteries of any mercenary foolish enough to push their flank. "We cannot hold this room forever, Commander!" El Sombra roared over the deafening crossfire. "The data has been broadcasted globally! The cartel is exposed, but Vance will bury us in the ashes of his own fortress!"
Marcus slammed a fresh magazine into his acquired assault rifle. He knew the assassin was right. The foot-thick steel vault doors had sealed shut behind them, cutting off their primary exit, and Vance’s private army was multiplying by the second. Marcus looked up at the ceiling, tracing the thick, industrial pipes pumping liquid nitrogen into the server cooling units. A reckless, suicidal tactic crystallized in the veteran commander’s mind. "Phantom!" Marcus barked, aiming his rifle directly at the primary pressurized valve cluster above the advancing mercenaries. "Hold your breath and get down!" Without waiting for a response, Marcus squeezed the trigger. The armor-piercing rounds shredded the reinforced metal. A catastrophic pressure explosion rocked the room as a massive cloud of sub-zero liquid nitrogen violently erupted. The freezing mist instantly crystallized the air, blinding the mercenaries and freezing their thermal optics and weapon bolts solid. As screams of agony echoed through the blinding white fog, Marcus and El Sombra surged forward, diving into a massive, grated maintenance ventilation shaft—the only remaining artery out of the glass fortress.
