Chapter 48 - The Architect's Trap

Outside in the howling blizzard, Marcus Reed lay perfectly still in the snow, his sniper rifle aimed at the massive glass windows of the ballroom. His earpiece crackled to life, but it wasn't Claire’s voice. It was a deep, synthesized mechanical tone. "Your daughter is currently surrounded in the server room, Commander," The Architect’s voice echoed in Marcus's ear. "If you pull that trigger, I will have her executed on a live feed. Drop the rifle and step out of the tree line. Face me."
Marcus didn't hesitate. The absolute terror of losing his daughter again threatened to shatter his focus, but the black-ops commander crushed the panic beneath decades of iron discipline. He rose from the snow, leaving the sniper rifle behind, and drew his heavy tactical sidearm. He walked slowly out of the tree line, stepping onto the snow-covered courtyard of the mansion. The glass doors slid open, and The Architect stepped out into the freezing storm. The masked mercenary commander was built like a tank, holding a heavy assault rifle. Surrounding the courtyard were a dozen elite snipers, their laser sights painting Marcus’s chest in a web of lethal red dots.
"You dismantled an empire, Reed," The Architect stated, walking slowly toward him. "But you are just one man. And all men break when you take away their blood." Marcus holstered his pistol, holding his empty hands out. His steel-blue eyes bored into the reflective mask of the killer. "You talk too much for a professional," Marcus rumbled, his voice cutting through the whistling wind. The Architect raised his rifle to execute the commander. But Marcus hadn't surrendered. He had simply stalled for the exact microscopic window of time he needed. Deep beneath the earth, Claire was making her move.
