Chapter 8 - The Arrogant Husband Finally Breaks Under Absolute Terror

The revelation hung in the humid air of the locked ballroom like a live grenade. The massive swan ice sculpture, a symbol of the Beaumonts' excessive, arrogant wealth, sat on a reinforced silver platter in the center of the room. Under the deep-red emergency lighting, the melting ice looked like it was crying tears of blood.

Marcus Reed didn't waste a single second. He released his comforting grip on Claire’s shoulder and marched toward the center banquet table. The wealthy guests scrambled out of his path, terrified of making accidental contact with the federal commander.

"You stupid, weak little boy!" Vivienne screamed, launching herself toward Preston. She slapped him violently across the face, her heavy sapphire ring tearing a fresh gash across his cheek. "You just gave them everything! You destroyed our family!"

Preston didn't even try to defend himself. He curled into a tight ball on the cream marble floor, weeping pathetically into his ruined navy linen suit. The arrogance that had fueled his abusive actions toward Claire was completely extinguished, replaced by the absolute, crushing terror of federal prison and cartel retaliation.

Marcus reached the ice sculpture. He didn't look for a delicate way to extract the hidden drive. He picked up a heavy, solid brass candelabra from the table, gripped it tightly in his large, scarred hand, and swung it with devastating force.

CRASH.

The heavy brass shattered the swan's elegant neck. Chunks of ice exploded across the table, scattering white-and-gold Easter flowers. Marcus swung again, driving the candelabra deep into the thick base of the sculpture. The ice fractured, revealing a small, watertight titanium cylinder frozen securely inside the core.

Marcus reached into the freezing, jagged ice and ripped the cylinder out. He twisted the cap, popped it open, and slid a sleek, black encrypted hard drive into his palm. The ledgers. The proof of decades of corruption, human trafficking, and money laundering.

"It's over, Vivienne," Marcus said, slipping the drive securely into the pocket of his faded olive field jacket. "Your empire is officially dead."

Vivienne Beaumont stared at the federal commander, her sharp blue eyes wide with a manic, unhinged disbelief. Her emerald couture dress was stained with water and Preston's blood. She looked around the ballroom at the state senators and CEOs she had controlled for years. They were all backing away from her, distancing themselves from a sinking ship.

"This is private property," Vivienne whispered, her voice trembling with raw hysteria. "You cannot do this. I will call the governor. I will call the president if I have to."

"The governor is already in custody," Marcus replied coldly. "My teams executed simultaneous raids across the state the moment I initiated the Black Code. You have no one left to call."

Sheriff Pike groaned from the floor, clutching his shattered, bloody nose. He spat a tooth onto the pristine cream marble. "You're a dead man, Reed. The people Vivienne works for... the cartel... they don't care about your National Command Authority. They will butcher you and your daughter."

Claire stood firm, her hazel eyes locked onto the corrupt sheriff. "My father isn't afraid of the cartel, Sheriff Pike. The cartel is afraid of him."

Marcus turned his attention toward the heavy, reinforced oak doors at the entrance of the ballroom. The Black Code lockdown was designed to keep everyone inside, but it was also designed to keep external threats out until the federal extraction teams arrived.

He tapped a hidden earpiece in his right ear, communicating with his tactical teams outside the mansion. "Command, this is Reed. Package secured. Primary targets contained. What is your ETA on the main breach?"

There was a long pause. The static in Marcus's earpiece crackled loudly, but there was no voice. No confirmation. No tactical response.

Marcus's expression, previously a mask of controlled authority, suddenly tightened. His steel-blue eyes narrowed as he pressed the earpiece deeper into his ear. "Command, acknowledge. Status on extraction."

Instead of a voice, a harsh, mechanical warning siren began to blare from the Emergency Security Panel on the wall. The red lights in the ballroom began to strobe violently.

Something was terribly wrong.
