Chapter 4 - A Federal Authority Strips The Corrupt Local Sheriff

The deep-red emergency light pulsed slowly, casting a sinister, rhythmic glow across the terrified faces of the Beaumont elite. The towering chandeliers hung uselessly in the crimson shadows. Inside the sealed ballroom, the air grew thick with a suffocating, heavy tension. Marcus Reed stood by the Emergency Security Panel, his broad shoulders relaxed, his steel-blue eyes calmly observing the panic he had just orchestrated.
Sheriff Raymond Pike’s chest heaved under his tan jacket. The illusion of his local power was rapidly dissolving. He drew his sidearm, pointing the barrel directly at Marcus's chest. His hands were shaking slightly.
"I'm giving you one last warning, Reed!" Pike shouted, his voice cracking under the pressure. "Override this system right now and open those doors, or I will put a bullet in you for terrorism and kidnapping! I am the Sheriff of this county!"
"You're a paid dog in a tailored shirt," Marcus replied smoothly, his voice easily cutting through the murmurs of the terrified guests. He didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun. "And you have absolutely zero jurisdiction inside this room."
"I am the law!" Pike roared, stepping closer, though he kept a cautious distance from the man who had just effortlessly dismantled Preston Beaumont.
Then came the money shot.
With agonizing slowness, in an extreme macro movement that commanded the attention of every soul in the room, Marcus removed the matte-black card from the security panel. He didn't put it back in his pocket. Instead, he flipped it around between his rugged, scarred fingers.
For the first time, the reverse side of the authentication card became visible.
It wasn't a country club override. It wasn't a standard law enforcement badge.
Embossed deeply into the black metal was a brilliant, gleaming GOLD FEDERAL EAGLE. Below the eagle was a high-resolution, holographic photograph of Marcus in full dress uniform. But it was the thick, bold lettering stamped across the bottom of the card that sucked the remaining oxygen from the room. It was one unmistakable designation:
NATIONAL COMMAND AUTHORITY.
Preston Beaumont, still bleeding onto his ruined white shirt, saw it. His pale-blue eyes locked onto the gold eagle, and his entire body went rigidly stiff. The arrogance that had defined his entire existence evaporated in a fraction of a second. He knew exactly what that designation meant. It wasn't just federal police. It was the highest echelon of state security, black-ops clearance, and absolute, unchecked governmental power.
Preston’s eyes slowly lifted from the intimidating black card, tracking upward until they met Marcus’s piercing steel-blue gaze.
Marcus calmly slipped the card into his dark denim jeans. He reached across his chest and methodically, deliberately, rolled up the left sleeve of his fitted black henley, revealing thick, muscular forearms covered in old, faded scars.
"Still think nobody’s coming, Preston?" Marcus asked, his voice a lethal whisper that seemed to echo off the cream marble walls.
Preston’s confidence completely disappeared. His jaw trembled, and he shrank back against the broken banquet table, suddenly looking incredibly small and fragile in his ruined luxury clothes.
"Arrest him, Pike!" Vivienne shrieked, though her voice lacked its previous venom, replaced now by raw, unadulterated desperation. "He has no right! He's a retired old man! Shoot him!"
"Shut up, Vivienne," Pike hissed, slowly lowering his weapon. His thick mustache twitched nervously. He recognized the card too. If he shot a man with National Command Authority clearance, he wouldn't just go to prison; he would be erased from existence.
Behind Preston, the building's internal systems continued their lockdown sequence. Multiple security locks on the secondary exits and service doors engaged one after another, echoing like gunshots in the quiet room.
