Chapter 19 - The Collapse Of The Underworld

The emotional reunion was brutally cut short by a deep, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor beneath them.

When the operative had dropped his submachine gun in his blinding agony, his finger had convulsed on the trigger. A wild spray of bullets had ricocheted into the darkness. One of those stray rounds had struck a rusted, pressurized gas line running along the cavern's ceiling—a remnant of the estate's antiquated heating system.

A high-pitched hiss filled the air, followed instantly by a catastrophic explosion.

A massive fireball erupted near the ceiling, illuminating the cavern in brilliant, blinding orange. The concussive shockwave knocked Marcus and Claire back to the floor. The ancient stone pillars, already weakened by centuries of water damage, began to crack and splinter under the explosive force. Massive chunks of masonry the size of cars began plunging into the black water below, sending geysers of freezing spray across the docks.

"The roof is coming down!" Marcus shouted over the deafening roar of the collapse. He hauled Claire to her feet. "We have to move! Now!"

They couldn't go back the way they came; the tunnel entrance was already completely blocked by falling debris. Their only option was the Zodiac boat.

Marcus practically threw Claire into the idling boat, vaulting over the rubber pontoon right behind her. He grabbed the throttles of the twin outboard motors and shoved them all the way forward. The engines screamed to life, the propellers churning the black water into a furious white froth. The boat surged forward, launching violently into the dark subterranean canal that led out to the open ocean.

Behind them, the cavern completely gave way. The vaulted ceiling collapsed in a deafening crescendo of destruction, crushing the docks, the bodies, and the last remnants of the Beaumont family's smuggling empire under thousands of tons of rock and water. A massive tidal wave of displaced water chased the Zodiac down the narrow canal, threatening to swallow them whole.

Marcus steered the boat with white-knuckled desperation, navigating the sharp, blind turns of the ancient canal by the sheer, terrifying light of the structural sparks raining down from above. The roar of the collapsing tunnel was deafening, the water level rising rapidly beneath them.

Ahead, a sliver of pale moonlight broke through the darkness. The exit.

"Hold on!" Marcus roared, bracing himself against the console.

The Zodiac hit the mouth of the tunnel at maximum speed, launching entirely out of the water. They flew through the air, crashing down violently into the rolling waves of the open ocean just as the tunnel behind them completely collapsed in a spectacular plume of dust and displaced seawater.
