Chapter 6 - Whispers Of A Dark Conspiracy Bleed Through Marble

Marcus Reed held the matriarch of the Beaumont family by the throat for three agonizing seconds before releasing her with a disdainful shove. Vivienne stumbled backward, her sapphire necklace clattering wildly against her collarbone. She gasped for air, her emerald dress losing all its regal splendor as she fell back into the crowd of terrified guests. The absolute dominance of her reign had been broken.

The crimson emergency lighting cast long, haunting shadows across the cream marble. The murmurs of the elite guests escalated into frantic, hushed arguments.

"I told you not to trust them!" a state senator hissed to a corporate CEO near the lavish champagne station. "If he has the offshore ledgers, we are all implicated! The federal grand jury will gut us!"

"Keep your voice down, you fool," the CEO shot back, his face glistening with sweat. "If we panic, we admit guilt."

Marcus heard every whisper. His ears were trained to filter through chaos. He turned his attention back to Preston, who was now clutching his bleeding mouth, trying to slowly inch away across the broken crystal and crushed Easter flowers.

"Where is the secondary hard drive, Preston?" Marcus demanded, his voice ringing out with terrifying clarity.

Preston froze. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. The servers are upstairs. Take them! Take whatever you want!"

"Don't play games with me, boy," Marcus growled, taking a slow, menacing step forward. "My team has already breached your security room on the third floor. The primary servers have been wiped. A failsafe was triggered ten minutes ago. Where is the physical backup?"

Claire looked down at her husband, a profound sadness mixing with her newfound resolve. "Preston, it's over. I saw you move the encrypted drive this morning. Before the Easter ball started. Just tell him."

"Shut up, Claire!" Preston screamed, his pale-blue eyes wide with a manic, desperate energy. He looked toward Sheriff Pike. "Pike! Do your damn job! Arrest this federal prick! If I go down, you go down! I have the receipts for every bribe my mother ever handed you!"

Pike flinched as if he had been physically struck. The heavy-set sheriff looked wildly around the locked ballroom. He was trapped between a ruthless federal commander with National Command Authority and the wealthy syndicate that had lined his pockets for a decade. Survival instinct kicked in, raw and ugly.

Pike raised his sidearm again, but this time, he didn't aim it at Marcus.

He aimed it directly at Preston Beaumont's chest.

"Sheriff, what are you doing?" Vivienne shrieked, her voice cracking in pure horror.

"Securing loose ends," Pike snarled, his thick mustache trembling as his finger tightened on the trigger. "You Beaumonts dragged me into this mess. I'm not going to federal prison because this spoiled brat couldn't keep his wife in line."

Before Pike could apply the final pound of pressure to the trigger, Marcus moved with explosive, blinding speed. The faded olive field jacket blurred in the crimson light. Marcus didn't draw a weapon; he didn't have to. He closed the ten-foot gap between himself and the corrupt sheriff in a fraction of a second.

Marcus's left hand clamped down viciously on the slide of Pike's sidearm, brutally jamming the firing mechanism and forcing the barrel toward the high ceiling. Simultaneously, Marcus drove his right elbow directly into the center of Pike's face.

The sickening crunch of breaking cartilage echoed through the ballroom. Pike let out a muffled scream, his nose shattering instantly under the impact. His grip on the gun loosened, and Marcus ruthlessly ripped the weapon from his hands.

With a swift, fluid motion, Marcus ejected the magazine, caught it in mid-air, and cleared the chambered round. The live bullet pinged loudly against the cream marble floor. Marcus tossed the useless, empty gun clattering across the room.

Pike collapsed to his knees, blood pouring from his ruined face, staining his crisp white dress shirt.

"Nobody dies tonight unless I authorize it," Marcus declared, standing over the bleeding sheriff, his steel-blue eyes blazing with unforgiving authority. "Now. Where is the backup drive?"
