Chapter 5 - The Wealthy Matriarch Loses Control Over Her Empire

The mechanical CLICK of the final security lock echoed through the Grand Easter Ballroom, sealing the wealthy elite inside a crimson-lit tomb. The air conditioning systems shut down, causing the temperature in the room to rise uncomfortably. The heavy scent of spilled champagne began to sour, mixing with the sharp, metallic tang of fear and Preston's blood.

Vivienne Beaumont refused to accept her new reality. Her entire life was built on manipulation, bribery, and absolute control over her environment. She smoothed her emerald couture cocktail dress with trembling hands and marched toward Marcus, her sapphire jewelry catching the dark red light.

"You think this little theatrical display frightens us, Marcus?" Vivienne demanded, stopping just out of his physical reach. "You are locking in state senators, corporate CEOs, and judges. When those doors open, you will face federal kidnapping charges. Your little black card won't save you from the army of lawyers I will unleash on you."

"The people outside those doors right now aren't your lawyers, Vivienne," Marcus replied, his expression an unreadable mask of weathered stone. "They are my team. And they are currently dismantling your entire estate."

"Liar," Vivienne spat, though her sharp blue eyes darted nervously toward the reinforced oak doors.

"You honestly thought my daughter was just a pretty trophy for your sadistic son?" Marcus asked, his voice dangerously quiet. He glanced at Claire, who stood tall beside him, clutching her cracked phone. "Did you really think I let her marry into this corrupt, filthy family without running a full kinetic background check on every single dime you own?"

Preston coughed weakly from the floor, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the cream marble. "She... she didn't know anything," he stammered, his polished Hollywood appearance completely shattered. "Claire is innocent. Just take her and go. Leave us alone."

"I am taking her," Marcus said, stepping slowly toward Preston. The heavy thud of his worn brown boots against the marble made the elite guests hold their breath. "But I'm also taking the ledgers. The offshore routing numbers. The blackmail files you keep in the estate's private servers."

Vivienne gasped, her hand flying to her throat. The color completely drained from her immaculate face. The empire she had spent decades building was suddenly standing on a trapdoor, and Marcus Reed was holding the lever.

"How do you know about that?" Sheriff Pike whispered, his tan jacket suddenly looking very cheap and inadequate.

"Because my daughter isn't just a victim, Sheriff," Marcus said, stopping over Preston and looking down at him with utter disgust. "She’s a federal informant. She's been collecting data on your human trafficking logistics and money laundering operations for six months."

The ballroom erupted into chaotic, panicked whispers. The wealthy guests exchanged horrified glances. Many of them were deeply entangled in the Beaumonts' financial schemes. If Marcus had the ledgers, half the room would be facing federal indictments before sunrise.

"You set us up!" Preston screamed, a sudden burst of rage temporarily overriding his fear. He glared at Claire with absolute hatred. "You manipulative little bitch! I gave you everything! I gave you this life!"

Claire stepped forward, her bare foot silent against the marble. The missing heel of her shoe no longer mattered; she stood with the posture of a survivor. She lifted her cracked smartphone, the screen glowing weakly in the red light.

"You didn't give me a life, Preston," Claire said, her voice steady and clear, carrying the undeniable strength of her father. "You gave me a cage. And you showed me exactly where you hide the keys."

"Give me that phone!" Vivienne shrieked, lunging forward with her manicured hands outstretched, desperately trying to snatch the device from Claire.

Before Vivienne could even cross half the distance, Marcus’s large hand snapped out. He grabbed the matriarch by the throat, not enough to choke her, but with enough forceful authority to stop her dead in her tracks.

"Touch her again," Marcus whispered, his steel-blue eyes boring into Vivienne's terrified soul, "and I will break your neck in front of all your friends."
