Chapter 33 - A Ship of Ghosts

The hijacked Black Hawk tore through the eye of the storm, finally descending toward a colossal, rust-streaked cargo ship drifting in the turbulent international waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This was no commercial vessel; it was a mobile black site, a floating fortress operated by the remnants of the cartel network desperately trying to regroup after the Beaumont ledgers exposed their global infrastructure. Claire was roughly dragged from the cabin by the mercenaries, her muscles screaming in protest, but her senses dialed to absolute maximum. The freezing, salty rain washed the dried blood from her face. Preston stumbled out behind her, his soaked prison jumpsuit clinging to his trembling frame as he tried to project an aura of arrogant authority on the slick steel deck.
Waiting for them under the harsh glare of industrial floodlights was Alejandro, the ruthless successor to the cartel empire following the exposure of El Jefe. Clad in a heavy black trench coat, Alejandro’s reptilian eyes locked onto Preston with raw, unadulterated disgust. "You brought me the girl, Beaumont?" Alejandro growled, his voice a low rumble over the crashing waves. "Her father just dismantled a billion-dollar financial syndicate. Vance has completely lost control of Washington. Your family is a pathetic liability."
Preston went completely pale, swallowing hard. His inherent cowardice immediately took the wheel. "But... but she is Marcus Reed’s only weakness!" Preston pleaded, holding his hands up defensively. "You can use her to force him to retract his federal testimony! I delivered exactly what I promised. Now I want my new passport and the Swiss routing numbers!" Claire, kneeling on the freezing steel deck, looked up at her husband with absolute revulsion. He was a parasite, begging terrorists for scraps. Suddenly, Alejandro drew a gold-plated sidearm, but he didn't aim it at Claire. He pressed the barrel directly against the center of Preston’s forehead. "A man who sells his own family to save his skin has absolutely zero value to me," Alejandro stated coldly. Preston’s pale-blue eyes bulged in pure terror as he stumbled backward. But before Alejandro could pull the trigger, a catastrophic explosion detonated at the stern of the cargo ship, sending a towering pillar of orange fire tearing into the stormy night sky. Marcus Reed had found them.
