Chapter 20 - The Dawn Of Absolute Justice

The cold, salty breeze of the Atlantic Ocean whipped across Claire’s face. She gasped, filling her lungs with the crisp, clean air. The heavy, suffocating scent of the country club, the blood, and the underground tunnels was gone. She looked back toward the coastline.

The sun was just beginning to break over the horizon, casting a soft, golden light over the sprawling cliffs of the Beaumont estate. But the untouchable fortress of the elite was no longer standing in arrogant defiance. It was a war zone.

Dozens of federal tactical helicopters buzzed like angry hornets in the morning sky. The massive manicured lawns were swarming with armored vehicles and hundreds of heavily armed federal agents. The blue and red flashing lights of emergency vehicles painted the pristine white walls of the country club in the colors of absolute justice.

Marcus killed the boat's engines, letting the Zodiac drift gently in the rolling surf just offshore. He leaned against the console, his chest heaving, his faded olive jacket soaked with saltwater. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small titanium cylinder. He had grabbed it off the stone floor before the explosion. The evidence was secure.

Claire sat on the edge of the rubber pontoon, wrapping her arms around her shivering body. She looked at her father. The terrifying apex predator was gone. He was just a tired, older man who had fought a war for his child.

"It's over, isn't it?" Claire asked softly, her voice barely carrying over the sound of the crashing waves.

"It's over," Marcus confirmed, a slow, exhausted smile touching his lips. "Vivienne, Preston, the judges, the cartel... all of them. The National Command Authority is tearing the estate down to the bedrock as we speak."

A heavily armed Coast Guard cutter broke through the morning mist, its spotlights sweeping the water before locking onto the small Zodiac. A voice boomed over a loudspeaker. "Commander Reed! We have you visual! Stand by for immediate extraction and medical support!"

Marcus raised a hand in acknowledgment. He looked down at his daughter. Her lavish lavender Easter dress was ruined beyond repair, her hands were bruised, and her face was stained with dirt and blood. But she had never looked more beautiful, and she had never looked more powerful. She had survived the fire, and she had forged her own strength in the flames.

"Come on," Marcus said gently, offering her his hand. "Let's go home."

Claire looked back at the cliff one last time, watching the corrupt empire of the Beaumonts burn in the morning light. She placed her hand in her father's, completely and finally free.
