Chapter 7 - Whispers Beneath the Chandelier

The transition from the worn uniform of a maid to the silk gowns of the Vance dynasty was not merely a change of cloth; it was an initiation into a battlefield where words were daggers and smiles were shields.

Two weeks after the intimate terrace wedding, Nathaniel stood beside Rose in the grand ballroom of the Vance family’s downtown estate. Below the three-tiered crystal chandeliers, Manhattan’s wealthiest families mingled, their eyes darting constantly toward the former maid standing on the arm of the city’s most coveted bachelor.

Rose held her head high. She wore an emerald gown that framed her posture, her hair pinned in soft golden waves. Yet beneath her composure, she could hear the caustic murmurs slicing through the classical quartet’s music.

"A domestic girl in couture," Lady Sterling sneered behind a feathered fan, speaking loudly enough for her table to hear. "Nathaniel lost his mind when his mother took that tumble. Marrying the hired help out of guilt or pity—it’s an embarrassment to the registry."

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched, his eyes hardening into flint. He made to step forward, ready to dismantle the woman’s husband’s hedge fund with a single phone call, but Rose’s gloved hand gently pressed against his forearm. Her scarred palms were hidden by fine lace, but her touch carried immovable strength.

"Let me," Rose whispered softly.

Nathaniel paused, watching her with breathless fascination as she glided toward Lady Sterling’s circle. The chatter died down instantly into tense, judgmental silence.

"Lady Sterling," Rose said, her voice clear, melodic, and completely devoid of insecurity. "I couldn't help but overhear your concern for our family's dignity. But if preserving dignity means watching an innocent woman fall to her death to preserve one's manicure, then I am grateful every day that I was raised with hands willing to bleed, rather than hands that only take."

Lady Sterling's face flushed crimson. Around the circle, several younger heiresses stifled amused gasps.

"You forget your place, girl," the older woman hissed.

"No, Lady Sterling," Rose replied, her gaze meeting the woman’s with the unblinking intensity of someone who had survived the worst life could throw. "I am Nathaniel Vance’s wife. My place is right here. And anyone who mistakes my past for weakness will find out very quickly how wrong they are."

Nathaniel stepped to her side, his arm wrapping possessively around her waist. His cold glare silenced the remainder of the circle. "My wife speaks for this family," he declared, his baritone resonating through the nearby alcoves. "Anyone who forgets that will find their credit lines pulled by sunrise."

As they stepped away into the private gallery, Nathaniel pressed a kiss to the crown of Rose's head. "You were magnificent."

"I spent years serving people who thought money made them gods," Rose murmured, leaning against his broad shoulder. "I'm not afraid of them."

Before Nathaniel could reply, his personal head of security, Marcus, rushed through the heavy oak doors, his expression grim. He held out an encrypted tablet.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance... you need to see this," Marcus said quietly. "Victoria Thorne’s cell at the correctional facility. It was found empty thirty minutes ago."
