Chapter 21 - The Secret Heiress
The room seemed to freeze. Rose stared down at the silver locket in her trembling hand.
"That's... that's impossible," Rose stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "My mother worked in the textile mills. She died when I was twelve from pneumonia because we couldn't afford medicine!"
"She hid in the mills to keep you alive, Rose," Eleanor said, a tear tracing the crease of her cheek. "Julianne Sterling was my dearest friend and your father’s primary partner. When the Obsidian Circle realized they couldn't corrupt Julianne, they orchestrated an industrial fire that wiped out the Sterling estates overnight. Julianne fled into the slums with her newborn daughter, vanishing into thin air."
Nathaniel turned slowly from the window, his eyes wide in utter shock. "Mother... are you telling me that Rose is..."
"Rose is the sole surviving heir to thirty percent of the Vance-Sterling conglomerate," Eleanor stated with absolute certainty. "When she walked into this manor three months ago seeking employment as a maid, I didn't recognize her face—she looked so weathered by hardship. But the moment she stood before Victoria to shield me... I saw Julianne’s fire in her eyes. I ran the DNA test three weeks ago, Nathaniel. Rose is not an outsider. She is the foundation of our house."
Rose sank back into her chair, her head spinning. All those years of hunger, scrubbing floors until her knees bled, stealing scraps of bread to feed her little brother Leo... it hadn't been an accident of fate. It was the aftermath of a war fought in the shadows of high society.
Nathaniel walked toward Rose, dropping to one knee before her chair. He didn't look at her as a billionaire looking at a servant, nor as a savior looking at a victim. His eyes held pure reverence.
"You starved in the cold while I grew up in silk," Nathaniel said softly, his voice thick with unspilt tears. "All built on the back of your family's sacrifice."
"Nathaniel, stop," Rose said, touching his cheek with her bandaged fingers. "You didn't know. None of this was your doing."
May you like
"No," Nathaniel replied, placing his hand over hers. "But making it right will be. Starting tonight, the maid is dead. Rose Sterling will take her throne."
