Chapter 44 - The Gala of Reckoning

The invitation arrived forty-eight hours later by courier: a heavy vellum envelope sealed with black wax and stamped with the three daggers of the Iron Meridian. The venue was not Geneva, but closer to home—an exclusive, subterranean masquerade ball held beneath the historic Grand Central Terminal, inside the abandoned private rail platform once reserved for presidents and titans of industry.

If the Syndicate wanted a war in the dark, Rose and Nathaniel were determined to drag them into the blinding light.

Rose stepped out of the black limousine in front of the private terminal entrance. She wore an exquisite midnight-blue gown woven with silver thread, concealing two ceramic blades along her thighs and a low-profile pulse transmitter beneath her corseted bodice. Nathaniel stepped out beside her, imposing in a classic black tuxedo, his eyes scanning the shadows of the colonnade with lethal precision.

"Marcus has tactical teams stationed at every ventilation shaft and emergency egress within four blocks," Nathaniel murmured, offering his arm to Rose. "If this turns into an ambush, we bring the ceiling down on them."

"It won't be an ambush," Rose replied, taking his arm, her posture flawless, radiating the poise of an empress going to war. "They brought us here to negotiate. They know we have Eleanor's decryption keys. They want the accounts unlocked."

They descended the marble staircase into the grand subterranean vault. The cavernous hall had been transformed into a decadent, opulent salon of shadows. Hundreds of figures in velvet cloaks, antique porcelain masks, and tailored evening wear mingled beneath chandeliers suspended from the vaulted brick arches. Classical violin music drifted through the air, masking the whisper of high-stakes conspiracies.

As Rose and Nathaniel entered, the violin music did not stop, but a subtle, chilling hush rippled through the gathering.

A tall man in a golden Venetian mask stepped forward, bowing with exaggerated courtly grace. "Mr. Vance. Miss Sterling. The Council has been eagerly awaiting your arrival."

"Save the theatrical nonsense," Rose said flatly, her gaze piercing through the man's disguise. "Where is the chairman?"

"Follow me," the masked man murmured, turning toward a secluded archway guarded by four men with silenced machine pistols hidden beneath long overcoats. "Some reunions require total privacy."
