Chapter 34 - The Fortress on the Sound

A torrential storm raged over the Atlantic, churning the black waters of the sound into eight-foot swells that slammed mercilessly against the jagged granite cliffs of Blackthorn Island.

Through the howling gale and blinding rain, a low-profile, radar-absorbent combat insertion boat cut through the waves like a black wraith. Nathaniel stood at the helm, his face shielded by a tactical storm balaclava, navigating the treacherous shoals by night-vision telemetry.

Beside him, Rose adjusted the seals on her tactical wet-suit, locking an automatic submachine gun into its waterproof chest harness. Behind them sat Lucas and eight elite operators—men who had sworn personal oaths to Nathaniel, not to the Vance bloodline.

"Thermal imaging shows forty armed mercenaries patrolling the outer battlements," Lucas shouted over the roar of the engines and the screaming wind. "The sea caves beneath the eastern cliff lead directly into the estate's primary generator vault. If we breach there, we can cut their radar grid and bypass the main kill zones."

"We move in two teams," Nathaniel ordered, cutting the vessel’s engines two hundred yards out and letting the tide carry them into the jagged sea cove. "Lucas, take three men and disable the satellite uplinks on the north ridge. Cut Eleanor off from the outside world. Rose and I will breach the subterranean docks and take the central command spire."

"Remember," Rose added, loading an armor-piercing magazine into her sidearm with a sharp metallic snap, "Victoria Thorne is mine."

The team slipped into the churning, freezing surf, swimming silently beneath the surface until they breached the submerged iron grating of the sea caves. Using miniature hydraulic spreaders, Lucas forced the rusted bars apart, allowing the strike force to infiltrate the bowels of Blackthorn Keep undetected.

The subterranean levels were a maze of cold concrete corridors, damp brickwork, and humming high-voltage power conduits. As they advanced through the shadows, Nathaniel and Rose moved in deadly synchronization. When two patrol guards rounded a corner near the generator bay, Nathaniel seized the first by the throat, driving him into the stone wall while snapping his trachea, while Rose eliminated the second with a lightning-fast sweep of the legs and a silenced round through the temple before he could raise an alarm.

"Generator room is secure," Lucas signaled through bone-conduction comms. "Cutting master power in three... two... one."

Across the entire island fortress, the interior floodlights went dark, plunging the halls into a void illuminated only by the faint, pulsing amber of backup emergency strips.

"Go!" Nathaniel hissed.

They surged up the grand stone stairwells, trading fire with scattered mercenaries caught off-guard in the sudden blackout. Every corner they turned brought them closer to the central rotunda—and closer to the heart of the spider's web.
