Chapter 39 - The Truth in the Ashes

The impact of the breaching charge blew the reinforced titanium doors inward off their hinges. Concrete dust billowed through the air like an impenetrable gray fog.

"Move!" Nathaniel roared. He caught Rose by the waist, dragging her behind the heavy mahogany desk just as a hail of submachine-gun fire shredded the leather chairs where Eleanor had sat only seconds before.

Eleanor scrambled on all fours across the glass-strewn floor, trailing blood from her scorched wrist, screaming to her men: "Kill them! Kill them both! Leave nothing recognizable!"

"Not today, Eleanor," Rose whispered.

Rising through the haze with deadly composure, Rose fired two double-taps into the dust. Two private security operatives collapsed instantly, their weapons clattering against the marble tiles. Nathaniel flanked from the right, his sidearm barking three times in rapid succession, neutralizing the remaining point men before they could establish a firing line.

Rose stepped past the fallen guards, stepping directly on the trailing hem of Eleanor's designer gown, pinning the older woman to the floor. Rose drew a tactical knife, jamming the blade into the desk surface an inch from Eleanor’s nose.

"Before we leave this godforsaken island," Rose said, leaning down so her lips brushed Eleanor’s ear, "tell me where the genuine Sterling ledger is. The real one. Not the forged nonsense you used to poison Nathaniel’s mind."

Eleanor spat blood onto the floor, her eyes burning with pure hatred. "You think you’ve won? Look at the terminal, Rose. The detonators may have failed, but the automated broadcast just went live to every financial news outlet on Earth. By morning, the Vance stock will be worthless. Every crime my syndicate committed over thirty years has been stamped with Nathaniel’s signature. You saved his life only to watch him rot in a federal cage!"

Nathaniel stepped up to the primary monitor, his eyes scanning the rapid streams of cascading data. "She’s telling the truth about the leak. She queued an encrypted dump of all the black accounts—using my personal biometric encryption."

Rose ripped an antique platinum signet ring from Eleanor’s right hand—a ring bearing the hidden seal of the Sterling trust. "She didn't use your biometrics, Nathaniel. She used your father’s. And Julianne gave me the counter-cipher before she died."

Rose jammed the signet ring into the terminal's physical drive port. The cascading red lines of code suddenly turned gold.
