Chapter 26 - The Unraveling
"The security encryption..." Marcus choked out, clutching his wound. "It was changed this morning at 6:00 AM. Only three people had the override key. You... Rose... and your mother."
Nathaniel shook his head violently. "No. That's impossible. Eleanor would never—"
Before Nathaniel could finish the sentence, the heavy brass service elevator at the back of the conservatory chimed—a clear, cheerful electronic sound that felt monstrously out of place in the blood-soaked room.
The steel doors slid open smoothly.
Standing inside the elevator was not a squad of faceless mercenaries.
It was Victoria Thorne.
She was stripped of her glamorous socialite gowns. She wore a tactical combat suit, her blonde hair pulled back, a sadistic, victorious smile stretching across her bruised face. In her hands, she casually held a suppressed submachine gun.
Behind her, seated calmly in an armored transport chair, was Eleanor Vance.
Eleanor was not tied up. She was not gagged. She held an open satellite tablet on her lap, showing the live master controls of the entire Vance-Sterling global security network.
Nathaniel’s gun slowly lowered in his hand, his eyes wide with a horror far greater than any fear of death. "Mother...?"
Rose felt her entire world tilt on its axis. The woman she had pulled from the rooftop terrace twice... the woman who had wept into her hands... the woman who had given her the Sterling locket...
Eleanor looked up from the tablet, her eyes devoid of the warmth, frailty, and love she had displayed just hours ago. They were as cold and sharp as frozen steel.
"You played your part exceptionally well, Rose," Eleanor said, her voice smooth, powerful, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
"Mother, what have you done?!" Nathaniel roared, stepping forward, his weapon trembling. "Step away from Victoria!"
"Lower your gun, Nathaniel," Eleanor said calmly, raising one hand. "Arthur was a sentimental idiot who let his ego blind him. He thought he was playing for revenge. He didn't understand the larger game. Arthur was never the head of the Obsidian Circle."
Victoria chuckled, resting the barrel of her gun lightly on Eleanor’s shoulder like an affectionate daughter. "Surprise, darling. The snake didn't die. You just cut off the decoy tail."
Eleanor met Rose’s stunned, horrified gaze.
"Did you really think your mother was the victim of an accident, Rose?" Eleanor murmured with a cruel, thin smile. "Julianne Sterling was brilliant. But she made the fatal mistake of threatening to expose the syndicate. So twenty years ago, I ordered the fire that destroyed your family. And when you were foolish enough to crawl back into my manor... I realized your blood was the only key left to unlock the offshore Sterling billions."
Rose’s knuckles whitened around her gun, her voice barely a whisper through the ringing in her ears. "You... you pushed yourself. You let Victoria stage the fall..."
"A small price to pay to draw out Arthur, eliminate him, bring you into the open, and claim full legal control of both dynasties," Eleanor said softly, pressing a single key on her tablet.
A mechanical countdown began to hum through the walls of the Grand Regent Hotel. Red digital timers blinked to life on every emergency display screen in the conservatory, counting down from sixty seconds.
*00:59... 00:58... 00:57...*
"Goodbye, Nathaniel," Eleanor said with icy finality as the heavy blast doors of the service elevator began to slide shut, sealing her and Victoria into the secure bunker shaft below. "You were always too sentimental to rule."
May you like
Nathaniel raised his weapon to fire, but the titanium blast doors slammed shut with a deafening, pneumatic hiss.
In the crimson glow of the conservatory, with sixty seconds before the entire building detonated, Rose and Nathaniel turned to look at the sealed blast doors—and then into each other's eyes.
