Chapter 45 - A Blade in the Velvet
The private chamber behind the grand ballroom was an opulent, wood-paneled salon furnished with antique velvet divans, a roaring fireplace, and a massive mahogany gaming table. At the center of the table sat three figures in identical silver masks, their hands folded calmly over polished ebony canes.
"You are reckless to come into our sanctum," the figure in the center spoke, their voice altered by a digital modulator hidden within the mask. "Eleanor was an asset of considerable value. Her failure at Blackthorn Keep cost this assembly billions."
"Eleanor was a rabid dog who thought she could run the syndicate on her own," Nathaniel said, stepping into the center of the room, positioning himself slightly in front of Rose. "She is dead. Her assets are frozen. And the only people who hold the biometric access codes to her European accounts are standing in front of you."
"We care little for her accounts," the figure on the left said coldly. "We care about the Sterling formula."
Rose’s pulse spiked, though her face remained an unreadable mask of ice. "What formula?"
The central figure chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. "Do you truly believe your mother died over real estate and stock certificates, Rose? Julianne was a brilliant biochemist before she married into high society. The synthetic compound she developed for Vance Global wasn't an industrial lubricant. It was a neurological stabilizing agent—a drug capable of reversing cellular degeneration, or, if altered, causing instantaneous, untraceable cardiac arrest."
Rose remembered the terrace. The rooftop. The syringe Eleanor had pulled from her clutch before trying to push Nathaniel’s mother into the void. It hadn't been an ordinary poison. It was Julianne’s stolen life's work.
Suddenly, the masked guide behind them stepped forward, drawing a slender, silver-plated blade from his cane. "And now, Miss Sterling, you will surrender the master synthesis sequence, or Mr. Vance’s mother will receive the final dose in her hospital suite."
Before the blade could reach Rose’s throat, she moved with blinding speed. Pivoting on her heel, Rose caught the attacker’s wrist, twisting the joint until bone snapped with a sickening crunch. She drove her heel into his knee, tearing the blade from his hand and flipping it in mid-air before driving the point through his palm, pinning his hand to the mahogany table.
The man howled in agony.
Nathaniel drew his concealed weapon, leveling it directly at the central masked figure. "Nobody moves. Marcus, execute breach protocol."
The heavy double doors of the salon didn't open. Instead, a metallic hiss echoed through the ornate brass vents near the ceiling.

"Did you truly believe you could outmaneuver the founders?" the central figure whispered, standing up slowly and raising a glass of dark red wine. "You walked into our tomb, Nathaniel."
