Chapter 31 - The Boardroom Coup
Thirty-six hours later, the top floor of the Vance-Sterling International Tower in Manhattan was the eye of a corporate hurricane.
The global financial markets were in freefall. The apparent demise of Nathaniel Vance and the horrifying allegations linking him to Arthur Thorne’s syndicate had triggered a massive stock sell-off. Inside the fifty-seat executive boardroom, the international board of directors sat in pale, panicked silence around the obsidian conference table.
At the head of the table, seated in an antique executive armchair, was Eleanor Vance.
She wore mourning black, tailored to perfection, with a single strand of South Sea pearls at her throat. Her face was composed into a mask of stoic, maternal devastation, but beneath the facade, her eyes gleamed with triumphant malice. Sitting at her right hand was Victoria, looking radiant and untouchable in a sharp charcoal suit, acting as the newly appointed legal trustee of the Thorne-Sterling alliance.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Eleanor began, her voice echoing smoothly across the room and through the private international video feeds. "My son’s tragic... descent into madness has broken my heart. But the Vance legacy must not falter. Under Section 14 of the conglomerate charter, with Nathaniel confirmed missing and criminally indicted, executive authority transfers solely to the founding chair."
"And what of the Sterling trusts?" challenged an elderly director at the far end. "Those accounts represent sixty percent of our liquidity, Eleanor. The offshore vaults are deadlocked without Julianne Sterling's direct lineage!"
Victoria smiled, opening a sleek leather folder. "As the surviving representative of the Thorne estate, and with the maid—the Sterling claimant—presumed dead in the Grand Regent explosion, the emergency accession protocols allow Mrs. Vance to absorb the holdings into our private offshore syndicate."
Eleanor raised a golden stylus to sign the digital transfer authorization on the master terminal. "Let us close this painful chapter—"
*BAM!*
The double mahogany doors of the boardroom were blown off their pneumatic hinges, slamming into the wall with a thunderous crack that sent three directors diving under the table.
Through the drifting haze of pressurized nitrogen smoke strode Nathaniel Vance.
His arm was wrapped in combat dressing beneath a pristine charcoal three-piece suit, his jaw squared, his eyes radiating a predator’s cold fury. Beside him walked Rose Sterling. She wore an immaculate tailored white pantsuit, her long dark hair pulled back into a lethal, elegant ponytail, and around her neck hung the Damascus-steel cipher cylinder of the Sterling dynasty.
Behind them stood twelve federal agents from the Department of Justice’s elite financial crimes task force, flanked by Lucas Vance and heavy private security carrying locked tactical cases.
The boardroom erupted into shrieks of disbelief. Eleanor’s hand froze mid-air, the golden stylus trembling between her manicured fingers for the fraction of a second before her expression hardened into pure venom.
"Nathaniel," Eleanor said softly, without a trace of maternal warmth. "You always were remarkably resilient."
May you like
"Step away from that terminal, Eleanor," Nathaniel said, his voice ringing through the cavernous room like a death knell. "You aren't signing a corporate transfer. You’re signing your confession."
