Chapter 36 - The Matriarch's Gambit
Rose’s mind reeled, a cold wave of dread washing over her, but she didn't let the blade waver. With a sharp, precise blow from the pommel of her knife, she knocked Victoria unconscious, leaving her limp on the shattered marble floor.
Spinning on her heel, Rose sprinted up the spiral stone stairs of the central observation spire.
The spire was a high-tech sanctuary suspended three hundred feet above the ocean cliffs, enclosed in thick, bulletproof glass that offered an unobstructed view of the raging storm outside. Servers hummed in the periphery, their digital interfaces glowing with the countdown for Project Eclipse: *00:08:42... 00:08:41...*
Nathaniel stood in the center of the chamber, his weapon lowered, his entire body rigid as stone.
Seated behind a massive steel desk, sipping a glass of vintage scotch as if enjoying a quiet evening at the symphony, was Eleanor Vance. She was immaculate, not a single hair out of place, completely unfazed by the firefight that had consumed her fortress.
"Mother," Nathaniel said, his voice hollow, dead, and utterly devoid of mercy. "Shut down the system. It's over."
Eleanor took a slow sip from her glass and set it down with a delicate click. "Nothing is over, Nathaniel. A true ruler understands that power is not about holding wealth—it is about controlling the fear of its absence."
Rose burst through the heavy doorway, her knife dripping with blood, her tactical vest torn. "The game has failed, Eleanor. Victoria is down. Your offshore networks are frozen. There's no syndicate left to save you."
Eleanor turned her gaze toward Rose, her eyes carrying a pity so chilling it made Rose’s blood run cold.
"Ah, the little maid who would be queen," Eleanor whispered softly. "Julianne had that same look in her eyes before the end. That pathetic, righteous fire."
"Shut down Project Eclipse!" Rose demanded, raising her sidearm and leveling the crosshairs directly between Eleanor's eyes.
"I cannot, Rose," Eleanor smiled, leaning forward and resting her elbows on the desk. She held up her left hand. Attached to her wrist was a surgical titanium cuff glowing with an ominous, pulsating blue light. "The countdown is bound to a biometric neural monitor wired to my heart. If my pulse stops, or if the timer reaches zero, the payload deploys instantly. But that isn't the real secret of Blackthorn Keep."
Nathaniel took a menacing step forward, his knuckles white around his weapon. "What have you done, Eleanor?"
"Twenty years ago, when I ordered the fire at Sterling Manor, Julianne didn't die trying to save her fortune," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a soft, venomous purr that seemed to silence the thunder outside. "She died trying to save a secret that would have destroyed both our families."
Eleanor's cold eyes drifted between Nathaniel and Rose, a triumphant, monstrous smirk spreading across her lips.
"Tell me, Nathaniel... have you ever wondered why your father vanished the exact same week the Sterling estate burned to the ground? Have you ever wondered why Rose’s mother had full executive signing power over the Vance blood trust?"
Rose’s breath caught in her throat. Nathaniel froze, an unbearable horror dawning behind his dark eyes.
"No..." Rose whispered, her voice trembling for the first time in her life. "No, that's impossible."
May you like
"Nothing is impossible in our world, my darling children," Eleanor laughed softly, her eyes gleaming with demonic delight as the red timer behind her blinked down to four minutes. "You see, Nathaniel... Rose isn't just Julianne Sterling’s daughter. She is your father's trueborn child. And the blood that runs through her veins is the exact same blood that runs through yours."
The observation deck plunged into a suffocating, horrifying silence, broken only by the shriek of the Atlantic storm—and the rhythmic, mocking tick of the countdown that held the world in its grip.
