Chapter 18 - The Rooftop Reckoning
The wind on the ninety-second floor terrace was a howling monster. Rain whipped across the polished glass tiles, making the surface as treacherous as an icy pond.
Nathaniel kicked open the heavy titanium terrace doors, weapon raised. "Thorne!"
Arthur Thorne turned slowly. Unlike his frantic, captured daughter, the elder Thorne looked impeccably composed. He wore a tailored cashmere trench coat, entirely indifferent to the biting cold. In his gloved right hand, he held a sleek black detonator; his left hand rested casually on the handle of Eleanor Vance’s wheelchair.
Eleanor’s mouth was gagged with heavy tape, her silver hair whipping wildly in the gale, but her eyes blazed with fury rather than fear. The wheelchair was balanced mere inches from the shattered glass balustrade—the very railing where Victoria had pushed her weeks before.
"Right on time, Nathaniel," Arthur said, his aristocratic voice carrying cleanly over the tempest. "You always were punctual. A trait you inherited from your father before I ruined him."
"Step away from my mother, Arthur," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly register. "Victoria is in federal custody. Pier 44 is crawling with Homeland Security. Your empire is seized. You have nowhere to run."
Arthur laughed—a dry, rattling sound that chilled Rose to the bone. "Run? You think I intend to run? A Thorne does not flee like a common thief, boy. When a dynasty falls, it burns everything in its wake."
Arthur’s gaze shifted, sliding past Nathaniel until it settled on Rose. His pale eyes narrowed with venomous disgust. "And you. The little stray. The kitchen rat who dared defy my bloodline. Victoria told me how you fought her. How you humiliated our family name before the entire city."
"Your family name was rotten long before I exposed it," Rose said, stepping out from behind Nathaniel’s shoulder. She did not flinch, even as Arthur raised the detonator. "You sacrificed your own daughter at the pier just to lure Nathaniel away. You’re not a patriarch, Arthur. You’re a coward hiding behind an old woman."
Arthur’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. "Silence! You think you’ve won because my daughter wears cuffs? Underneath this terrace floor are three hundred pounds of industrial demolition charges. I press this switch, and the entire penthouse drops into the street below."
"What do you want, Thorne?" Nathaniel demanded, lowering the weapon slightly to keep Arthur’s thumb from pressing the red trigger. "Name it."

"A simple exchange," Arthur smiled, his teeth flashing in the lightning. "Your mother lives. In exchange... the girl jumps."
