Chapter 30 - Shadows in the Ruins
The hidden vault was pristine, untouched by the inferno that had consumed the world above.
Lined with velvet cases and sealed copper lockboxes, the room was Julianne Sterling’s final sanctuary. In the center of a glass display pedestal sat a heavy, octagonal cylinder forged from titanium and Damascus steel—the Sterling Cipher Key. Beside it lay an envelope bearing Rose’s true name in elegant, flowing cursive: *Rosalind Julianne Sterling.*
Rose’s breath hitched as she reached out, her fingers hovering over her mother's handwriting. Before she could touch the parchment, a sudden, muffled pop sounded from the woods above.
Then came the sharp, unmistakable chatter of suppressed automatic gunfire.
"Contact!" Lucas’s voice crackled through Nathaniel’s earpiece, strained and chaotic. "Hostiles dropping in from the tree line! Fast ropes—they’ve got night vision and heavy armor! It’s Victoria’s kill squad!"
Nathaniel grabbed the titanium cipher cylinder and thrust it into Rose’s tactical vest pocket, his eyes instantly hardening into combat focus. "Secure the cipher! We move now!"
A second later, two flashbang grenades tumbled down the entry chute, bouncing across the stone floor.
"Down!" Nathaniel tackled Rose behind the heavy iron door as the grenades detonated in a twin flash of blinding white light and deafening thunder. The shockwave rattled their teeth, but the iron slab took the brunt of the concussive force.
Through the ringing in her ears, Rose heard the heavy clatter of tactical boots dropping down the chute. Two mercenaries clad in unmarked black uniforms entered the smoke, infrared lasers slicing through the gloom.
Rose didn't wait for Nathaniel to clear the corner. Rolling out from behind the iron door low to the ground, she fired three rounds from her sidearm. The lead operator took two shots to the chest plate and one through the neck seam of his ballistic collar, collapsing instantly.
Nathaniel stepped past her, his carbine barking twice, eliminating the second mercenary before the man could bring his weapon to bear.
"They're flushing the perimeter," Nathaniel said, checking the magazine of his weapon. "Lucas’s team is pinned near the southern bluff. If they encircle the exit, we’re buried alive."
"There’s a drainage tunnel that leads out to the sea caves," Rose said, grabbing a dead mercenary's tactical vest to strip two smoke grenades. "Smugglers used it a century ago. My father mapped it before the fire."
They moved with ruthless, lethal efficiency. As three more strike team members descended into the cellar, Rose popped the pins on both smoke canisters, kicking them down the corridor. Dense gray fog filled the vault in seconds, blinding the attackers' thermal scopes with thermal dispersant smoke.
Nathaniel surged forward like a phantom through the mist. A mercenary swung his rifle toward the silhouette, but Nathaniel seized the barrel, wrenching it upward while driving an elbow into the operative's faceplate. With a brutal pivot, Nathaniel used the man as a human shield against a barrage of incoming fire, returning pinpoint shots that dropped two more hostiles in the entry foyer.
Rose reached the iron grate at the rear of the wine cellar, shooting off the rusted padlock with a single bullet. She kicked the grate open, revealing a narrow, stone-cut conduit sloping steeply downward toward the sound of crashing waves.
"Nathaniel, go!" she shouted.
Nathaniel dropped the empty rifle, drew his sidearm, emptied the magazine down the corridor to suppress the remaining hostiles, and slid feet-first into the conduit right behind her.

Behind them, high-explosive charges planted by the mercenaries detonated, collapsing the ancient stone cellar behind them in a roar of dust and falling rock, sealing the hunters out—and plunging them into the black roaring throat of the subterranean sea caves.
