Chapter 33 - Beneath the Neon Grid
Four hours after the shootout at the Vance-Sterling Tower, Nathaniel and Rose sat in a subterranean communications bunker beneath an abandoned industrial warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Surrounded by humming server racks, tactical monitors, and encrypted radio gear, this was Nathaniel’s deepest fallback station—known only to him and Lucas.
Rose sat on an ammunition crate, wrapping fresh medical gauze around a graze on Nathaniel’s forearm. Her touch was gentle, an intimate contrast to the deadly precision she had displayed in the boardroom.
"You're bleeding again," she murmured, securing the medical tape with a sharp tug.
Nathaniel didn't flinch. He looked down at her, his dark eyes softened by an intensity that went far beyond their shared vengeance. He reached up with his uninjured hand, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, his thumb lingering on the soft curve of her jawline.
"I’ve spent my entire life thinking my mother was a cold, calculating woman who built an empire to protect our name," Nathaniel said, his voice thick with bitter regret. "Every cruel lesson she taught me, every ruthless acquisition she forced me through... I thought it was for the family. But I was just her weapon. She created the monster she needed to shield her true empire."
Rose leaned into his touch, her eyes meeting his with fierce clarity. "You aren't her monster, Nathaniel. You saved me on that rooftop. You bled for me in those ruins. You chose the truth when you could have chosen the empire."
Nathaniel leaned closer, his breath warm against her lips. "I chose you, Rose. The empire can burn to ash. But I will not let her take you from me."
Before she could answer, his lips captured hers in a deep, fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of smoke, danger, and unyielding devotion. Rose wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, anchoring herself to the only man who had ever stood between her and the abyss. For a fleeting moment in the neon-lit darkness, the war faded, replaced by the pounding of two hearts beating as one.
"Boss," Lucas's voice interrupted, hesitant and urgent from the console bank across the room.
Nathaniel broke the kiss slowly, his hand holding Rose's for a lingering second before they both turned toward the monitors.
"We cracked the secondary hard drive recovered from the boardroom terminal," Lucas said, his face illuminated by the harsh blue light of the screens. "Victoria wasn't bluffing about the grid. Eleanor isn't trying to flee the country. She's retreated to Blackthorn Keep—her private island fortress sixty miles off the coast."
Rose stepped toward the console, her eyes scanning the blueprints flashing on the screen. "Blackthorn Keep was built during the Cold War. It has autonomous radar, anti-aircraft batteries, and a private harbor. Why would she trap herself on an island?"
"Because she isn't trapping herself," Lucas said grimly, bringing up a live satellite heat map. "She's activated Project Eclipse. She's linked the Sterling trust’s remaining automated liquidity to a high-yield cyber weapon. In six hours, if her executive override isn't restored, the system will trigger a catastrophic surge across the eastern seaboard's power and financial grids. Trillions in trade will be erased in milliseconds, collapsing the global economy while her offshore shadow syndicate buys up the distressed assets for pennies."
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. "She's going to burn down the financial world so she can rule the ashes."

Rose looked at Nathaniel, her voice icy and clear. "Then we storm the fortress."
