Chapter 41 - Echoes in the Boardroom

Forty-eight hours after the destruction of Blackthorn Keep, the sun rose over Manhattan, casting long, crimson shadows across the glass canyons of the financial district. The city was in an uproar. The headlines on every digital billboard screamed of scandals, assassinations, and corporate espionage. The Vance Global stock had plummeted twenty points at the opening bell, driven down by rumors that Nathaniel Vance had vanished or been indicted.

Inside the monolithic boardroom on the eighty-second floor of Vance Tower, the atmosphere was like a burial vault.

Eleven board members and three high-ranking executives sat in frozen silence. At the head of the long table sat Walter Sterling—the estranged, treacherous uncle who had sold Rose’s mother to the wolves two decades ago, now acting as the representative for the shadowy syndicate creditors.

"The situation is clear," Walter said, tapping his gold pen against a stack of takeover documents. "Eleanor Vance is confirmed dead at her private estate. Nathaniel Vance is missing and implicated in multi-billion-dollar money laundering operations. Under Section Nine of the Vance Charter, the executive authority defaults to the primary creditor consortium. Sign the transfer, gentlemen, or the SEC freezes every asset you own by noon."

A trembling executive reached for his pen. "We have no choice. Without Nathaniel's voting shares, we are insolvent."

"Put the pen down, Gordon," a cold, smooth voice commanded from the heavy double doors.

The room froze. Walter’s pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the polished mahogany table.

The doors swung wide. Walking through them was not a defeated fugitive, but Nathaniel Vance, clad in a flawless bespoke charcoal suit, his countenance aristocratic, merciless, and completely devoid of fatigue. And beside him, commanding the room with every step, walked Rose.

She wore no maid’s uniform. She wore a tailored crimson sheath dress, her hair swept up to reveal an antique diamond-and-emerald choker that every member of the old money elite recognized instantly: the crest of the Sterling dynasty.

Behind them walked two armed federal marshals, accompanied by Julianne Sterling’s original estate attorneys.

"You're dead," Walter stammered, turning pale as a corpse. "Both of you... the reports said you drowned in the sound!"

May you like

"Reports can be expensive to alter," Nathaniel said, taking his place at the head of the table while Walter instinctively backed away like a frightened dog. "But the real reason we're here isn't to contest the takeover, Walter. We're here to execute it."
