Chapter 43 - Shadows of the First Council

By dusk, the boardroom had emptied, leaving only Nathaniel and Rose looking out over the glittering lights of Manhattan. The city was calm again, but for them, the battle had merely shifted from the open battlefield to the labyrinth of global shadows.

Nathaniel poured two glasses of amber scotch, walking over to Rose and handing her one. "The board unanimously ratified the merger. The Sterling and Vance assets are unified. No one can challenge your standing now, Rose."

Rose took a slow sip, the warmth spreading through her veins, but her expression remained guarded. She stared out toward the dark horizon where the ocean met the sky. "It was too easy, Nathaniel."

"Easy?" Nathaniel chuckled softly, though there was no humor in it. "We were almost incinerated on an Atlantic rock, framed for global treason, and hunted across three states."

"No," Rose insisted, turning to face him. "The corporate files Eleanor left behind—they were too clean. The infrastructure at Blackthorn Keep wasn't built on Vance capital alone. The military-grade ordnance, the orbital radio relays, the deep-vault clearance... Vance Global doesn't have that kind of international reach. Not even Eleanor had those connections."

Nathaniel’s brow furrowed. He set his glass down on the marble credenza. "What did you find in the sub-directories?"

Rose pulled a thin, transparent data-card from her evening bag. "When I bypassed the neural cuff, my portable drive copied an automated mirror partition. Eleanor was receiving direct commands until twenty minutes before we breached her sanctum."

Nathaniel leaned closer, his eyes narrowing as Rose projected the data onto the smart glass of the window. A single insignia materialized against the backdrop of the New York skyline: an iron circle bisected by three vertical daggers.

"The Iron Meridian," Nathaniel whispered, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute dread.

"You know them?"

"I thought they were an urban legend among the old European families," Nathaniel said, his jaw clenching. "A syndicate of six industrial dynasties formed during the Cold War to manipulate global supply chains. Eleanor wasn't the head of the snake, Rose. She was just their governor for the North American sector."

At that moment, Nathaniel’s encrypted phone buzzed on the desk. An unlisted number flashed across the screen.

Nathaniel answered, putting it on speaker.

A low, distorted voice drifted into the room: *"Congratulations on surviving Blackthorn, Mr. Vance. You and Miss Sterling have performed admirably. But the governor's seat cannot remain empty. You will attend the winter summit in Geneva, or your mother will not survive her second medical transfer."*

The call went dead.
