Chapter 28 - Ashes and Allegiances

Sirens wailed across the financial district, an undulating chorus of emergency vehicles converging on the Grand Regent like ants swarming a wounded beast. Black smoke billowed into the midnight clouds, obscuring the upper towers in a dense veil of ash.

By the time Nathaniel and Rose forced open an emergency service hatch on the fortieth floor and staggered into an unmonitored stairwell, a private tactical convoy was already waiting in the subterranean freight bay. Lucas Vance, Nathaniel’s most trusted head of private security, stood beside three armored black SUVs, assault rifle slung across his chest, his jaw clenched tight.

"Boss! Miss Sterling!" Lucas lunged forward, ushering them into the fortified interior of the lead vehicle. "The perimeter is crawling with federal marshals and local SWAT, but our satellite comms picked up an automated executive broadcast five minutes ago. Your mother had a kill-switch protocol ready."

Nathaniel wiped the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand, his eyes cold as flint. "What did she release, Lucas?"

"A manufactured deep-fake confession and falsified financial transfers," Lucas said Grimly, passing a secure encrypted tablet into Nathaniel's hands. "Eleanor has informed the board of Vance Global and the media that *you* and Rose Sterling orchestrated Arthur Thorne's execution, bombed the Grand Regent to eliminate the syndicate board, and tried to assassinate Eleanor to seize the trust funds. Right now, every law enforcement agency in the country has shoot-to-kill warrants for both of you."

Rose let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "She pushed herself off a penthouse balcony to set me up, orchestrated an international bloodbath, and now she’s made us the scapegoats for her syndicate."

Nathaniel stared at the digital screen, watching his mother's pre-recorded, tearful press statement broadcasting across every major news network. The woman was immaculate, feigning the grief of a shattered matriarch mourning her corrupted son.

"She didn't just frame us to cover her tracks," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly register that sent a shiver down Lucas's spine. "She did it to trigger the emergency conservatorship clauses in the Sterling-Vance accords. Rose... the twenty billion dollars in offshore reserves your mother left behind. If Eleanor proves you are an internationally wanted fugitive or dead, the trust dissolves directly into the Obsidian Circle's private banking network."

"She killed my mother for that fortune," Rose whispered, her hands balling into fists so tight her nails drew blood against her palms. "Julianne Sterling died in a fire Eleanor lit twenty years ago. I spent two decades scraping through the gutter, thinking I was just an orphan maid looking for scraps of justice. But I am Julianne’s daughter."

Nathaniel reached out, his large, calloused hand covering her trembling knuckles. There was no pity in his gaze—only an unyielding, lethal devotion.

"She took your family, Rose. And she used me as a blind pawn in her game for thirty years," Nathaniel said softly, every syllable laced with steel. "We aren't running. We're going to tear down every pillar she built until she has nothing left to hide behind."

"First, we need Julianne's legacy," Rose said, lifting her chin, her golden-flecked eyes burning through the shadows of the SUV. "My mother knew Eleanor would come for the assets. She created a physical master cipher before she died. She hid it where Eleanor would never deign to step foot."

Nathaniel tapped the glass divider. "Where, Rose?"

"The ruins of the Sterling Manor," Rose replied. "The ashes she left behind."
