Chapter 37 - The Paralyzing Lie

The rhythmic chime of the digital timer echoed like a funeral bell against the reinforced glass of Blackthorn Keep. Three minutes and forty-five seconds remained. Outside, the Atlantic gale smashed against the cliffs, casting violent sprays of seafoam across the panoramic windows, but inside the observation room, the chill was absolute.

Nathaniel did not lower his weapon, though his arm trembled with a rare, devastating tremor. The cold mask of the Vance patriarch slipped, revealing the raw agony of a man whose foundations had been obliterated in a single breath. He stared at Rose, his gaze searching her amber eyes for any echo of his own bloodline, any hint that the woman he had loved, bled for, and sworn to protect was his own half-sister.

"Look at him, Rose," Eleanor purred, leaning back in her high-backed leather chair, savoring every drop of their agony. The blue surgical cuff around her wrist pulsed in sync with her elevated heartbeat. "Look how easily the mighty Nathaniel Vance breaks. He conquered Wall Street, he crushed cartels, but the thought that he took his father's daughter into his bed... that destroys him."

Rose’s chest burned. For three seconds, she felt the terrifying abyss opening beneath her feet. Her mother’s journal, the coded transfers, the inexplicable access to the Vance family accounts—all the fragments seemed to snap into a monstrous mosaic. But then, as her gaze tracked the smug, reptilian curve of Eleanor’s lips, something snapped inside Rose. Not fear. Not shame.

Rage. Pure, crystalline calculation.

"You're lying," Rose said, her voice cutting through the tempest like an obsidian scalpel.

Eleanor’s smile tightened marginally. "Denial is a pathetic shield, child."

"My mother’s executive override at Vance Trust wasn't granted by your husband," Rose said, stepping forward, the muzzle of her compact automatic never wavering from Eleanor’s temple. "It was granted by your husband's *father*, William Vance, thirty-five years ago. Because Julianne Sterling wasn't his lover. She was the sole trustee of the Sterling-Vance joint venture before your husband ever embezzled a single cent. You fabricated the paternity file to keep Arthur from signing over the Vance shares to Julianne’s legal heir."

Rose took another step, her combat boots clicking sharply against the marble floor. "Three minutes, Eleanor. You wore that cuff because you knew Nathaniel wouldn't pull the trigger if it meant incinerating the city. But you forgot one thing. I was trained in the dark. I know how biometric relays work. If your heart stops, the bomb blows. But what happens if your arm is severed from your nervous system?"

Eleanor’s eyes flashed with real terror for the first time. The blue light on her wrist flickered as her pulse spiked sharply.

May you like

"Nathaniel," Rose commanded, without breaking eye contact with Eleanor. "Hold the door. We have two minutes to rip the Viper’s venom out by the root."
