Chapter 9 - The Surrogate's Deliverance

By dawn on Saturday, the Massachusetts State Police, operating in conjunction with the FBI and the New York State Police, raided an unlicensed private maternity facility situated on a rural property outside Saratoga Springs, New York.

Detective Miller returned to my hospital room at ten o'clock, his trench coat damp from the October rain, carrying a secure laptop. He set it up on my rolling bedside tray and opened a encrypted video link.

On the screen was a sterile, brightly lit hospital room in Albany Medical Center. Resting in the bed was a young woman with dark, exhausted eyes, holding a bundle wrapped in pink blankets. Beside her stood a team of social workers and a female federal agent.

"Her name is Maria," Detective Miller explained, his voice softening. "She’s nineteen years old. Six months ago, Harold Vance brought her to the Saratoga clinic under the guise of an asylum-advocacy program. They told her she was carrying a child for an infertile diplomat's family who would sponsor her legal citizenship."

"And the baby?" I asked, tears welling in my eyes as I watched the tiny infant yawn beneath the fleece blanket.

"Delivered via emergency Cesarean section six hours ago," Miller said. "Healthy, six pounds eight ounces. Maria had no idea that Harold Vance and Chloe intended to sever all contact, forge a birth certificate naming Chloe as the biological mother, and leave Maria with five thousand dollars and a one-way bus ticket to Texas."

"Where is Chloe now?" Daniel asked, his arms crossed, his face an impenetrable mask of cold granite.

"Chloe had a full psychological breakdown in the holding cell last night," Miller said. "When we served her with the secondary indictment for human trafficking, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder, she began tearing off her hair and clawing at her own skin. She’s currently under 24-hour suicide watch in the psychiatric ward at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital."

"And Martha?"

"Martha’s legal team tried to file an emergency habeas corpus petition this morning, claiming medical distress due to a hypertensive crisis," Miller sneered. "The judge threw it out within four minutes. Judge Morrison denied bail entirely. Martha and your father will be held without bond until the formal arraignment on Monday morning."

I looked at the screen, watching Maria stroke the downy hair of the newborn child. A child who was meant to be used as a financial token, a counterfeit heir designed to steal forty-two million dollars over the dead body of my own baby.

"What will happen to Maria and the child?" I asked.

"The federal victim advocacy program is handling their protection," Miller replied. "Daniel’s legal firm has already stepped up pro bono to handle Maria’s asylum application. With her cooperation against the Vance trafficking ring, she will receive a U-visa, full legal residency, and witness protection funding."

"Good," I whispered. "Ensure she gets the best care. Every penny Daniel and I have can go to that girl and her baby."

"You won't need to spend your own savings, Elizabeth," Aunt Helen said from the window, closing her phone with a sharp snap. "Arthur Senior’s estate attorney just called me. Under the explicit terms of the 1998 family trust, any beneficiary who commits a felony against another descendant is instantly and irrevocably disinherited. Martha, Chloe, and Arthur are legally dead in the eyes of the trust."

Helen looked back at me, her eyes clear and unyielding. "You are the sole surviving heir to the entire forty-two million dollars, Elizabeth. The estate is yours."
