Chapter 58 - The Floating Citadel

The heater in the cab of the truck rattled loudly, blowing tepid air against the condensation-slicked windshield. Behind us, the burning wreck on Charles Street faded into the Boston skyline.
"Where did you get this truck?" I demanded, my heart still racing at a lethal pace, my hands trembling as I checked Leo’s swaddle. He had fallen asleep, exhausted by the sheer terror of the night.
"Dr. Wallace," Chloe said, staring dead ahead at the road, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. "The coroner you met at St. Jude's. He helped me escape the private wing after you burned the marina. He knew what was coming. He knew once Campbell failed, Eleanor would purge the entire domestic roster."
"Where is she, Chloe?" Miller’s voice came through the broken rear window of the cab, cold and hard. "Where is Eleanor?"
Chloe swallowed hard, her jaw tightening. "She isn't on land. She hasn't set foot on American soil in thirty years. She lives aboard *The Sovereign Archon*—a four-hundred-foot private medical research vessel anchored just outside international waters, twelve miles off the coast of Gloucester."
"A maritime laboratory," Miller muttered. "No jurisdiction. No FDA oversight. No human rights treaties. She built a floating butcher shop."
"It’s worse than that," Chloe whispered, a single tear cutting through the soot on her cheek. "She’s dying. The synthetic organ failure is accelerating. The communication Campbell received... the override... it was an automated distress trigger. Her body is failing. If she doesn't receive the unblemished neonatal marrow and cord blood from Leo within the next six hours, she won't survive the sunrise."
I looked down at my baby boy. His innocent face was peaceful in the dim dashboard light, completely unaware that his life had been marked as an elixir for a monster who refused to die.
"She won't get him," I said, each word carved from ice. "We go to the federal authorities. We turn over the ledgers, the yacht recordings, the financial trusts—"
"There are no federal authorities out there, Elizabeth!" Chloe cried out, her voice cracking with terror. "Half the First Circuit Court of Appeals has offshore trust funds tied to Eleanor’s medical research! The judges who would sign the warrants are on her donor waitlist! If you walk into a federal building, they will separate you from that baby before you can clear the metal detector!"
"She's right," Miller said grimly from the truck bed. "When we ran the offshore manifests from Fort Vance, three sitting congressmen and two foreign prime ministers were listed as beneficiaries of the Aegis Vanguard longevity protocols. You don't take down an empire like this through a courthouse. You take it down at the heart."

"How do we get aboard?" I asked, looking Chloe straight in the eyes.
Chloe reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy magnetic keycard encased in lead shielding. "I was supposed to deliver the extraction team's biometric confirmation. I have the docking transponder code for the medical supply tender at Rockport Harbor."
