Chapter 18 - The Family Crypt

Oakridge Cemetery sat on a fog-drenched bluff overlooking the dark expanse of the Hudson River. The rain had subsided into a freezing, bone-chilling mist that clung to the marble headstones and wrought-iron crosses.
Daniel killed the cruiser's engine at the iron perimeter gates. Three tactical squad vehicles pulled up silently behind us, their light bars blacked out.
"Elizabeth, you stay in the car," Daniel commanded, checking the magazine of his service weapon before racking the slide. "This isn't an interrogation room. If Croft and Vogel are down there, they are armed, cornered, and desperate."
"I am the biological key, Daniel," I said, my voice dead and unyielding as I showed him the electronic keycard we had retrieved from Chloe’s purse. "The vault requires a biometric Vance bloodline sample to open the secondary cryogenic chambers. If you breach it with explosives, the fail-safe will incinerate the remaining samples, including the legal proof that clears me and condemns Martha."
Daniel stared at me for five agonizing seconds, seeing the steely resolve in my eyes, before cursing softly under his breath. "Stay directly behind my shoulder. If I say drop, you hit the dirt. Understood?"
"Understood."
We navigated the narrow gravel paths on foot, our boots sinking into the soggy turf. At the highest point of the cemetery stood the Vance Family Mausoleum—a gothic granite structure built like a miniature fortress, flanked by weeping stone angels.
The heavy bronze outer doors were slightly ajar. A thin black electrical cord snaked out from the darkness inside, connected to a muffled, humming portable generator hidden behind a clump of yew bushes.
Daniel signaled the tactical officers to flank the entrance. With weapons raised, we stepped into the cavernous, freezing interior.
The air smelled intensely of formaldehyde, ozone, and damp earth. In the center of the granite floor, the massive stone slab bearing the name *ARTHUR VANCE SR.* had been mechanically slid aside on hydraulic rollers, revealing a brightly illuminated subterranean staircase leading deep beneath the earth.
From the depths of the tomb came the frantic sound of metal tools clattering against steel, followed by the terrified, agitated voice of an older man:

"We don't have enough liquid nitrogen to purge the third tier, Julian! The seals are frozen shut!"
"Then use the thermite!" Julian Croft’s raspy, wounded voice snarled in response. "Burn the whole vault down! If the marshals pull those DNA sequences, Martha isn't just going to prison—she’s taking us to the death chamber with her!"
